The thing that I think we seem to be missing is this guy was in the British Special forces, and has climbed to the top of Mount Everest, you dont do that with an Eagle scout badge. The British Special Forces are extremly brutal and their survival skills are remarkable. Having said that I also believe that he needs to play up to the audience for ratings. He does openly admit to having a camera crew with him that do not go thru what he does. I also believe that although he makes it appear that he is going to be in big trouble if the scenerios he plans dont work he will ultimately get help if its life threating. just my 2 cents
That's the most educated thing I've seen someone post on this yet. Thanks PerfectDark!

Contrary to popular belief, it is not quite as unusual any more to have climbed Mt. Everest. I believe there are nearly 2,000 climbs a year...reaching the summit, of course, is not quite as common. But Everest is, in fact, downright crowded, and they are certainly not all special forces....the age range, BTW is I think 15 years old to 70 (to summit), so yes, I imagine there might be someone with an Eagle scout badge.
And a lot of people, a lot of people
who climb Everest are reckless, untested and shouldn't be there...and survive anyway. I don't give him a great deal of "he must be right because..." for that.
Now he is a mountaineer - well trained, very well trained. And Special forces will always earn my respect.
But what is more realistic? A special forces guy lost in the woods, or some guy out on a snowmobile who is like an average joe schmo? Again, entertainment - almost in the line of Fear Factor (water out of elephant poo?) versus almost a more documentary type show. When I watch survivorman I am watching for actual pointers...Man versus Wild is nearly gross out entertainment.
It is personal preference for sure, and really in the end we are comparing entertainment value similar to whether you like baseball or hockey and why...and we won't get far.
They just have a different approach.

The Emmys are for TV and I get caught up on my reading while they are on. The Academy Awards (Oscars) are for movies and I serch the internet while they are on. Like I said I had NO idea myself before I was married.
Can you imagine the job description for the stune double....."You want me to eat what????!!!!!"
Have to admit about the Everst thing, nowadays it is not the accomplishment it used to be.
And I don't care what y'all say Les can out survive your "Bear" anyday of the week and twice on Sunday!!!

Your right although he has made it to the summit of Everest so that makes him a bit more credible. And again just MO I would rather watch someone who is trainned in getting out of hairy situations then see someone fumble through. But if you pay attention to Man vs Wild he gives you alot of pointers to remember if certain things happen and you dont have to be in the exact situation hes in to use them. But lets not get off topic weather you like the show or not is irrelevant, potato, potatoe.. watch what you like.. question was is he real or not? Which I understood that question to be is this guy as good as he is portraid? IMO Yes he is, although he has nothing to proove to anyone anymore, he does it for entertainment, his own adrenaline rush and gets paid coin for what he obviously loves to do.

I am a big fan of the show, however, I found the everglades show a bit peculiar. He made alligators out to be voracious man eaters with a fancy for humans. So he had to cross a canal and wouldnt swim because he saw a gator up the way. So he climbed a dead tree that leaned over the canal. It was quite over dramatic.
Although I am a fan and respect them, I think he starts his fires for the night, stop filming and then has a beer and a sammich with the GPS carrying crew and goes to sleep in a tent.

good points perfectdark... i really could careless if Bear did stay in a hotel a night or two when conditions were unbearable (pardon the pun
)... didnt Survivorman sleep on a boat and have constant checkups when he was "lost at sea" in the little survival raft??? pretty much the same thing to me...

Except that there was a very bad storm that came in that was actually life threatening.....that's why he had to go back on the boat.

Man we've got to bring this one back. ok so I broke down and watched Survivorman last night. There was actually a good point on there I wouldn't have thought of.
He broke one of the cameras he was carrying and used it to start a fire. Good pointer since most of us have cameras when we're out and about...
