I was going to wait for the 75, I wouldn't even think of putting one in a 29. I was just curious if I moved the water, substrate, and LR from the 29 to the 75 if I still needed to wait a while. And double check that a 75 would be big enough.
I will play it safe and wait a few months after the 75 is set up. I was planning on waiting at least 3 to 4 months after the move before I added anything! Just to be sure all is well and stable.
Thanks so much,
Jessica

the other thing u can do to jumpstart your pods is order some online. There are several places that sale them and once your tank is finished w/the cycle its a great way to get the pod population going quickly. And yes 100lbs is fine to support one.

Well i would try to find someone who can take him for u for awhile. Then set up a 30 gallon fuge. pack it full of half base rock and half Live rock to not Put too much of a strain on yur wallet. Buy some pods and then put them in yur fuge and let them breed

I hate LFS's that just want to move product and animals for quick profit.
I agree with everyone here that is saying the tank is NOT ideal for this fish. I was considering getting a pet Green Mandarin (just one, and he would be alone in my tank). Still, after doing LOTS of research, talking with people that actually have them, and consulting with people on this board, I decided NOT to get one.
Fishieness, thumbs up to you for takin' it back :D It was the right thing to do.

I have 90 gl. with 120 LR and 100 LS, tank about 3 months old, levels have been great for 2 months now. 1 yellow tang, 1 brown powder tang, 2 falsd percula clowns, 1 foxface and 1 coral angel dwarf. adding fish slowly to let system adjust. doing good so far. have good CUC in place and 1 BTA that is doing great. My wife wants one of these mandarine badly so i started reading. I dont have a sump but a wet dry and aquac proteihn skimmer and 2 power heads. plenty of flow. can i get pods to live without a sump, can a mandarin make it in my tank. I feed frozen brine and pellets soaked in vitamins 3 times weekly with algae sheets. Will this work? can I get pods to add to tank, will they make it with just live rock/ New to salt so learning. Thanks guys you have already helped me avoid mistakes.

The amount of rock you have will allow 'pods to reproduce and prosper as your tank matures with time. It should be able to support a Mandarin in just a few months as far as food goes.
Your tank is already overstocked in my opinion so I'm not keen on suggesting you add even more fish. I'm especially concerned about the Powder Brown Tang, a 90 gallon is questionable for this fish.

The clowns are about 1 inch, the yellow tang about 4 inches, the brown tang about the same, foxface is arounf 4 inches, and coral angel about 2. would you consider this too much in 90 gl? LFS said there would be no problem at all with this number. Thanks rick

If you never expect your fish to grow that still wouldn't be OK in my opinion. Powder Brown Tangs are open water swimmers and need a long tank. Just my opinion.
For new hobbiests my suggestion is to research the full adult size of the fish you want. Then stock at no more than 1" per 5 gallons of tank space.
You're at about 35 inches of fish when you consider the adult size. They could do reasonably well in a 180 gallon tank.

Thanks, how fast should I expect these fish to mature to full size, If I use this figure of 1 inch to 5 gallons, I'm in trouble later on down road but okay todayl How quick do they grow. I do hope to enlarg to another tank later but this will be a year or more from now as this tank has been a big cost. Are ther other fish that might be low in the load of the tank that would be better, I picked these due to grandaughter desire and wifes desire and my yioolo tank. Thanks so much

I've had a spotted mandarin in my 35g for about 6 months. He's doing OK but not the best. It's clear that he keeps on the thinner side but he's still plenty active. He does eat some of the frozen mysis that I put in there every day. His colors are still good and he's still active so I'm not concerned, especially because he eats frozen.
I had a normal mandarin when I first got into the hobby about a year ago... 4 months later he died. I listened to the LFS and they assured me he would eat frozen mysis. I tried live brine too, and even bought tiger copepods online, but it still wasn't enough. The last few weeks of his life he would barely move, and the "fans" on his sides barely kept him suspended.
I've seen it happen both ways... I just got lucky with my spotted mandarin, and I'm told that for some reason they are more likely to accept frozen food than normal mandarin's.
Personally, I would experiment with different foods, and I'm told that he'll only look for alternatives when he's depleted your tank of pods, which shouldn't take too long in a tank your size. If he keeps getting thinner and thinner, I would return him. It's better to take him back than let him die... take it from a guy who learned that the hard way.
I've recently been trying to figure out how to make a refugium of some kind for my 35g. I think it's possible, although kinda silly. Some people take a HOB filter and remove everything from the resevoirs, filling it with chaeto and pods and stuff... interesting idea for smaller applications.

It really doesn't have that much to do with the size of the fish. It's more along the lines of space. That Powder Brown needs a LOT of swimming room even as a juvenile.

I started to write a long winded reply but then said, what the heck...Its simple. Some guy or girl wrote that this fish needs 100+ lbs lr. Now some other guy/ girl wrote it can be sustained w/ 10 lbs. hmmm sounds like the bible or government to me (sorry I went there). Some people continue to have children under non-optimal conditions..
.
I am a proud owner of a Biocube 29 w/ CPR small fuge and house a Scooter and Mandarin. I have stocked my fuge with 16+ bags of SWF.com pods over the past 4 months. My fish eat my own prepared food using fresh seafood and supplements (selcon, cyclop, marine snow etc etc.) I also have three clams under a nanotuner upgraded PC hood (144w). If everything I read was true.....McCain/ Palin would actually benefit this country...sorry went there too..

J/K and don't get mad at me, but sometimes the "norm" can go the other way. Just look at how much this hobby has changed.
Sorry that ended up being long anyway!!
