Don't get me wrong gypsy lady because I hope you succeed to your satisfaction here. Just jumping in with some more information that the other posters here can use to evaluate where they will go with things, or not.
I am glad you posted that info.

Not to hi-jack this thread, but since some of you guys following this thread seem very knowledgable about Mandarins. I had a wonderful mandarin for the past year, my tank has been and is still populated with thousands of coepods. I got home yesterday, and my mandarin seemed to be stunned, could not swim, he was still breathing just fine, stomach was stuffed, and his coloration was still vibrant except for one spot near his tail was pale white. I put him in a large net to isolate him, and he passed away lastnight. I do have some Mojanos, and a couple of apstasia anenomes that have gotten rather large. Could one of these be the culprit that killed my mandarin?

Also, my percula was doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago, but she pulled through.
Any answers, or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hijacking is encouraged in this thread!

You say his stomach was stuffed? It may have been bloated. That with combined with the white spot might have indicated a bacterial infection. I am not sure an aptasia could kill a fish. The might be able to give them little stings. Your clown may have pulled through but if you see this again the preferred treatment is Maracyn II. Just to clarify I am not saying that this is what you should do absolutely, I would ask others for their opinions as well. This is just my guess on what info you supplied.

My mandarin lived 8 years on prepared food. Was an adult when he was brought home so I have no idea who old he was. I didn't have a fuge and I had a wrasse.
Definitely wasn't living off of pods in the tank because when the family was going through a divorce and the tank was only being fed 3 days a weeks, he got this size....

When he came to his new home, and was fed frozen everyday again, he fattened back up.
Just adding to the data......

That is great news! I hope mine does as well, I love him.

I'm not sure if it's because he wasn't dependent on pods, but this guy was very out going. Those that live on pods are hunting out of view all day. Mine was always out begging for food.

I haven't seen mine eat any frozen, but she (LOL) is out all the time...always picking at something, a rock, the glass...the sand...I know I have loads of pods cause I see them everywhere...as a matter of fact when I cleaned the glass yesterday, the mag got seperated, and there were bunches of them on it...

I am hoping to experience the same success with my mandarin!! Thanks so much. Do you mind if I ask what exactly you fed him......I would like to try to acheive the same success. I am experiencing that outgoing personality yours had with mine. It is pretty cool!
And...Moondog, I am very sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like you were doing an excellent job caring for him. I know I would be sad if mine died like that as well.

Prolly using the magfloat as a safe place to populate. It sure would have a large supply of food for them to eat. I have heard of that before.

Mysis was their staple. Some cyclopeeze, frozen brine. When I went to this one LFS, I would pick up live black worms as a treat. The tank loved them.

I thought peeps have been having better success with them... no? I haven;t read much on them lately.
Something happened to my guy. He was injured somehow and there was this white line through his eye down his body. White like an absence of colour and it looked like it would have been a long stinging tentacle or something. That's purely speculation. He lost his vision after that.

When I said stuffed, I was trying to avoid the comment of it not having enough pods to eat, he was his normal fat self. I was just concerned, because I have never had anything like this happen (granted, I have only kept saltwater for a year), it was just all of the sudden, and whithin 24 hours it was over. I am concerned that I have something in my tank that needs to be erradicated, within the past couple of weeks, my zoanthid colony was obliterated by something overnight, and then the hermit crabs were all over that rock the next day. It seems as if the zoa's are recoverying, or at least a few of them. I have seen some rather large bristle worms, but my sixline is keeping them at bay, I have not seen them out and about since I purchased the sixline.
Water params are pretty good, 0 amm, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, ph a little low around 8 right now, specific gravity right around 1.023-1.024.

I have a ton of bristle worms and some are quiet big, they are not your problem. You may have a predatory hitchhiker. Start to look in your tank at night. If you can put a red lens over a flashlight.

Yep... sounds about right. Mine eats emerald diet, mysis, brine, cyclops, krill, and phyto all mixed together with vitamins and garlic... I am hoping he continues to thrive.
