How often do you feed your mantis, and can you buy hermits specifically for feeding or do you have to shell out $.90 for every meal?

I have one of those "Do Not Touch Or Taunt Unless You Want Your Finger Smashed" signs. What, you've never seen those before???

We feed her a few times a week. I personally have never seen hermits specifically for feeding. So far she hasn't gotten a live meal yet, since when we have tried she either didn't touch it or tried to bury it. We have been feeding her krill, and need to go to the grocery store and get her some squid, clam, and a couple other things just to switch it up a bit. So once she does start eating live food, she will only get it once a week to keep her appendages strong. The less I have to feed live the better.

I'm very excited for you
You better have pics if you get it!!!
The appendages in action are quite the site. You really don't realize how neat it is and how much power comes from those little creatures until you see it in person. The first night we brought her home, we could her her whacking the rocks. We both looked at each other like, is that what we think that is? Very cool

WOW ! Great thread so far . Please keep the pictures coming . I am still in a holding patern waiting for W-2's so I can file my taxes . Soon as that happens theres gonna be a mantis tank in our house .
My girlfriend is getting excited too . She didnt realize we could have corals in there . So now she is super excited to have a nano reef , The mantis is just a side effect for her .

I'm sure it will grow on her. At least she is on board with the whole mantis tank thing. When my fiance first told me he wanted a mantis tank, I tried to think of every excuse possible (yes, I used the whole glass breaking excuse
) for him not to get the tank. Now that we do have them, I love just sitting and watching them. I am so glad I eventually caved in and let him get into it. The corals were a main selling point for me before we got the tanks, I must admit. Once you get the tank, we need pics!!! The more mantis lovers the better, because we could definitely use more. Too many mantis throw-away-ers in my opinion

Mmmk, so I haven't really posted much about Monty since the first couple of posts since he has been more like a Houdini than Monty. So, I think through all of the stress of almost getting eating and then having to do an emergency tank transfer, he looks as though he is missing an appendage where there was one previously. He seems to be functioning just fine (heard him whacking rock, and was surpisingly loud for such a little guy
). I don't know if something happened through all of this, or maybe he had a bad molt, but we are hoping that he grows it back when he molts again since he shouldn't be stressed out anymore (I hope
)...oh yeah, other than the fact that Justin must have accidentally hit the power strip switch when turning the lights out last night because when I woke up this morning, their was no surface agitation (meaning filter wasn't running), no lights would turn on, the temp. had dropped to about 72 degrees, and the Xenia was drooping and other corals were closed up
I fixed everything hoping that when I came home everything would be fine, and it is thank goodness. I saw Monty and he is happily renovating his home, uni-appendage and all
Poor little Monty, we will get it right eventually

It's loud enough for you to hear when the tv is going, but then again, there tanks are right next to the living room. It's really not all that loud, and it doesn't carry too far. Like for example, I can hear it when I am in the bathroom when the door is open, but the bathroom isn't that far away either
Ok, let's put it this way, our apartment is about 1000 square feet, and you can only hear the clicking when you are in the surrounding area, i.e. dining room, living room, kitchen and occassionally the bathroom, but only because they all surround the tanks. It only seems loud because it comes from such a small creature. It's not something that will disturb your everyday activity, or wake you up. I hope that helps

Hi!
Just happened to run across your post about Monty. So happy to hear that I gave him up for adoption to a great home. Now, here's the news, I have caught another mantis. Looks about the same as Monty, only slightly larger. Was way too close to my sexy shrimp - eek! Grabbed the rock out quick, and put it in a bucket until the mantis came out. If you would like a buddy and/or mate or possible meal for Monty- I can send this one off to join him. Tempted to set up my own mantis tank- but eventually you just have to know when to say when
!

Oh no, sexy shrimp!!! I wish I could take another one, we already have two mantis tanks set up
I would take him in a minute if I could have more than one mantis in a tank (tisk tisk for putting him up for a meal
) You really should start a mantis tank, they are super easy to take care of and lots of fun as you can see

What kind of filtartion are you running and how many watts is your tank again ?
I saw a good deal on an acrylic nano . But it doesnt have a skimmer and only 18 watts of lighting . I would like to have some corals in there .

We are running a marineland bio-wheel filter on the 20 long and a AC30 powerhead. There are about 6W/gal. on it right now, but they are just PC's.

We think they are white, but haven't gotten a really good look at them, especially since he changed colors in the nano.
