Yeah, as long as they don't bury their food and horde it, you don't need a lot of filtration. I definitely don't think a skimmer is needed.

Whoever said margarita snails hold up against mantis shrimp were wrong wrong wrong...they don't
All weekend we have been trying to save margarita snails from certain doom. We have had one casualty. On Friday, we found one inside her lair of doom, and tried to get it out, but couldn't, and besides, it probably wouldn't have lived much longer if we would have saved it because Gingi had ripped off the protective covering
She is such a little havoc reeker. Then, later that same day, we found another one in there she was trying to get at, but that one I saved thank goodness. She is a big pig. She has been trying to attack the snails all weekend. We figured after her huge meal she would be fine, but noooo, she just had to have more. We have been having to do a head count like every hour because we are afraid she is going to get them. Her technique is to flip them over, whack at there protective covering, and try to rip it off, then dig inside for the meat. She will whack the shell every now and then too, but basically she is a big cheater
And now, she has another lair of doom on the other side of the tank that she does her hunting from. I will have pics later when I get home from work. She has been going crazy all over the tank the past few days since she has healed from the molt. She is quite the active little thing, and one of her new favorite games is to walk on corals and swim in them, it's so fun to watch my corals get all p.o.-ed
Naughty mantis

We have 3 different types of Xenia, Aussie Duncans, a few fuzzy mushrooms, some sort of brain/favia looking thing, their was a torch but it kept getting knocked over so it went into Monty's tank, some regular mushrooms, some sort of brown star polyp rock, a green star polyp rock and I think that's it.
I will be posting more pics tonight, I got lazy/busy the past couple of nights.

Thanks . I'm just dying to get this on the move . I feel like I have waiting forever to get forward motion .
I think we are actually going to be doing 2 tanks . A peacock might just be the second one .

What type of mantis will be in the first tank? Two mantis tanks are always better than one IMO
It's really interesting to have two different species, you get to see the similarities and differences in them, very fun to watch. It's hard having to wait, and I don't do well with the waiting game.

As of yesterday, all margarita snails have been removed from her tank. Once we had our second casualty (almost three) we decided that we would take them out and try to figure something else out as far as tank maintenance goes. It was kind of humorous, as I was trying to save the third snail, she kept grabbing it from me and trying to take it back into her lair. She is such a little devil, I swear I saw horns the other day. She has been out and about a ton, and has been excavating her second home. She is quite the little construction worker. Here are the pics I have been promising.

This is her showing me her imitation of a bug splattered on a windshield, she is quite the comedian

This picture was taken from the back of her tank

This is a picture of the wall she is slowly building in the back of her tank so that we will stop staring at her, you can see the shell and the protective covering of her second conquest. She had the protective covering set on top of the shell, but it fell off

Wow she is absolutely stunning! I Think you said you got her from a friend but I can't remember... do people buy these or are they the best hitchhikers ever!?!?
Anyway awesome job on the tank, and thanks for the pics this is always the first thread I look at in Nano.

Thanks
We got Gingi from a pet store that was about two hours away. It took us a few weeks to find her, but we finally did and couldn't be happier with the little devil. We don't have big enough tanks to get enough live rock and have one as a hitchiker, never been that lucky to get one for "free"

I was gonna get a neogonodactylus wennerae. But I might just go with the peacock and save some room on having two tanks
Honestly, if I were you, I would get the Peacock first and then get the N. Wennerae if you decide to get another tank. Don't get me wrong, I love Monty and would never get rid of him, but if you want to see a lot of activity, and really be able to have fun with it, I would suggest the Peacock. They are much larger making them a lot easier to see (usually we have to search for Monty, but I know where his main home is, so I can usually spot him there
) and they actually come out and roam the tank and do quirky things. Monty mostly chills in his home and I only get to see the front 1/3 of his body, unless I am lucky enough to see him dart from one home to another.

Pardon for not reading your post too closely, but did you mention what size and type your tank is? We have a 44g glass bowfront that currently is FW and I'm tempted to turn it to SW and either put ponies or Mantis in it.

Gingi is in a 20 long (footprint of a 30 gal., just shorter). If you got a Peacock, a 44 gal. would be fine for it since they are really active. It would definitely be out and about, or at least from what I have seen from ours, and from what I have read. I must admit that Ponies are very cute though

I'm starting to hate this hobby
This gets very addictive and FW is no longer fun! I guess it would be a good idea to place a plexi under the sand to prevent the Mantis from breaking the glass?
This is probably a project for the summer as we are getting ready to put a 135g together. I'm getting sick of seeing that tank/stand/canopy take room in my breakfast area!
What kind of filtration and flow do you have going in there?

It is wayyy too addictive
We went from 1 tank to 3 in a very short time, and 2 of those are devoted to 2 mantis
We put a piece of plexi glass on the bottom just to be safe. We are running a Penguin 150 Bio-Wheel which is decent (rated for up to 30 gal.), but we will eventually switch it out for something else, and we have an AC 30 powerhead, and so far so good.

We could move Magnum 350 to the 44g even thought it has a Rena Filstar XPX2 on it right now and it's suppose to be for both FW and SW.
What type of sand do you have and what about your lighting?

Yeah I was thinking of it and rather than set up two tanks and double the costs . I think I will just be doing one tank with a peacock in it . It will save me some money at the moment .i can alwas go back and get a wennerae later .

We are using carib sea arag alive sand, I think
It's small granules. We have PC's on it, 130W I believe.

I had never seen that video before, very interesting though. It has some good information. I had heard about that whole filling in there burrow, but we haven't done it yet since she is actually still building and shaping a couple different lairs.
