Mantis!

Update!
I got my aquarium today. Its 10x better than what I originally had planned on getting which was the 36g bowfront. Nice sleek setup but not ideal for a mantis.
Instead I got a 40g aquarium (breeder style) with a built in overflow, 20g sump, stand, canopy, 24" 2x65 with 1 Actenic and 1 10 K bulb so I can keep some zoa's and such, a 5lb bucket full of premium sand, Aqua C Remora skimmer with MJ 1200, Mag9.5 return pump. The aquarium itself looks like it was never used. That is how fantasic it looks.
ALL for...........$205!
Smokin' deal if I said so myself.
The overflow and sump had alot of tube worms growing on it so I had to scrape those off and get what looks like tiny white specs that were very hard to the touch off as well. I dont mind at all, putting in the manual labor to clean it up. Cleaning it up and making it look nice is 1/2 the fun of setting up a new aquarium.
One of my problems is the Overflow. Its build into the aquarium. What happens if my Mantis climbs in it one day!? Is that even possible? Is there any way to prevent that?
Also, I was thinking about getting 2x Koralia's #2 instead of three. Is this good enough circulation? It would be 2x Koralia's #2 plus the Mag9.5 return pump pushing the water back in.
I will update with pictures tomorrow. Gotta get new hoses and fittings.

I don't consider it a risk. For years I've had overflows and no one even made a motion to do so.
Your tank is going to be perfect.

Ok. Whew.
Should I put eggcrate on the top of the tank?
And do you think a 24" 2x65 with 1 Actenic and 1 10 K bulb would be too much and possibly cause Shell Rot?

Make sure you use a nice u-tube shape PVC where he can go into complete darkness to molt. Did I ever put up the pic of my "cave". I don't think I did. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow.

This was the pipe under the rock. It's actually 3 PVC fitting put together so that the body of th e"U" would be under the sand and the ends would turn upward above the substrate.

Awesome tank.
Random question but I am curently working on my sump. I have a large amount of bubbles and microbubbles entering the tank from the hoses running to the sump. Can I make a sock or something that will catch a large amount of these? I tried a sock as a test run and it worked great. I can make a couple and replace them each month if this is an option.

You'd have to replace them more than that I'm afraid. I do so about 3 x a week. Your nitrates will climb if you don't. I have bunches of them over time and just throw them in a soapless washing spin.
Sometimes new tanks have microbubbles they have to work out, sometimes it's a loose fitting. Try tighting up your connections... hand tight only though.
Are you using baffles in your sump? Sponge?

Yup. Three baffles to catch microbubbles, refugium, two more baffles, then return pump. I have a Remora Skimmer so no need to add extra space for protein skimmer.
Ive been running the tank with tap water to do some tests. I cant find any hoses that are small enough to fit.
I dont have any problems replacing them. I just need to know if I can do something like that and what type of material they need to be made out of. The socks I mean.

Hes asking for a hole in his hand then. Either way, if that were to injure him..I dont think it would be a pretty sight from what I read.

The guy at the LFS let's the 7" peacock hit his finger. I said I didn't need the demo. I got one anyway. There wasn't any damage. What these guys actually will do is grossly exaggerated. It happens, but of all the people that have kept mantis', how many have had their hands cracked open?

See, thats how you know how little I actually know about these. I had full faith that you would be sent to the hospital if hit bu a fill grown mantis.
