Mated pair of clowns?

Do you have to buy a mated pair of clowns to get them to breed? Or can you just buy to clowns and they will become a mated pair?

It depends a lot on the Clownfish Specie. For Maroon Clownfish it's best to buy a mated pair IMO. For Percula or Ocellaris buying two juvenile fish will almost always end with a mated pair. For other species just buying 2 juveline fish will work but not always.

oh yeah and if I was to breed these fish would I have just as good a chance with wild perculas compared to tank bred ones? I want the to breed the wild ones because they seem to have more of that blackish coloration.
Thanks

The coloration has a lot more to do with nutrition than with the genes so either will work equally well or equally bad.

Actually the percs that Bill Addison "engineered" will get more black than any wild caught pair than I have ever seen. And I know that its in the genes and not the nutrition. Nutrition can play a role somewhat but in many cases its in the genes.
Below are "grandchildren" (F2s) of Bill Addisons clowns

the pic below are "great Grand children" (F3s)of Bill Addisons clowns

I have see F4s color just as dark, and the F1s were also as dark, and all tank raised.
There are many pics out there of this blood-line and 95% all develop that deep black black coloration
More F4s all from different people but still in that Bill Addison Bloodline

Hi Rod! Very nice to hear from you again. All I meant by nutrition vs genes is that when you have Wild Clowns and Aquacultured adult clowns that look similar and breed them, the offspring will look similar provided they all receive the same nutrition. I was only addressing the Wild vs Aquacultured from the question.
Thank you for clearing up the point that Clownfish with more black are more likely to produce offspring with more black.
