how many inches of fish can you have per gallon in an established tank? i have heard anywhere from 1 in. per 2 gallons to 1 in. per 5 gallons. also, i am assuming that this number goes down with a new tank. is this true? thanks.
there is going to be a lot of varibles that affect the amount of fish that you can keep in a given tank. but that equation would not be something to go by.
I would do research on the fish you want to keep. There are some fish you aren't going to be able to keep in small tanks. If you have a 70 gallon tank that's 36X18X25 some say that a tang wouldn't be happy in it. Some fish need a lot of room to swim and others are fine without the space. Don't buy fish based on the inches/gallon formula, it doesn't work, not matter what you LFS says. HA!
i really haven't been going by that, its just that thats all i've heard in the past. to re-phrase my question, would the following fish fit in my tank? it is being set up this week and this list is what i would eventually like to keep. the tank is 45 gal. (36"l by 12"w by 24"h). my fish wish list is:
1. royal gramma
2. false percula clown
3. flame angel
4. yellow watchman goby
5. green chromis (probably 3)
the chromises aren't something that i absolutely have to have, but if they fit i would like to have them.

I'd say that is just about the max I'd recommend for your tank.
+1
Good list for a small community. Stick to it.

ur list looks good. the angel need to be out in last once ur tank stablizes. green chromis imo need at least 5 to do well. they r schooling fish. if u put 3, one will get picked on constantly til it dies. 5 tend to spread the aggression a bit.

ok thanks. do i have enough room to add all of the above fish plus 5 chromises?
I would skip the Chromis, otherwise you have a great list.
The rule of thumb I recommend is to research the normal adult sizes in inches and then 1" per 5 gallons using the adult size of the fish. This is especially true for new hobbiests with new tanks.
the tank itself is new, although i had a 35 gal fowlr tank a few years back and i have kept some of these fish in the past, so i have some experience. i probably will stick on the safe side and skip the chromises. i'm not dying to get any at the moment and i really don't want to overcrowd the tank. with the above list, i will have a max of about 12", which would really be all i would want to add based on 1 in. of fish per 5 gallons. thanks.
I got 12 fish in my 84gal 1 of them is a scopas tang and the others are just nano fish. And have 2 7" tinfole barbs in my 55freshwater they are to big but still have room to swim because i took out all the rocks.(had them sense I was 8 years old)
i wouldnt really go buy how many inches of fish you can get, maybe just a little but stay in the range of 1 inch of fish per 2-5 gallons area. (I think most people stick to 1 inch of fish per 2-3 gallons or so)
Other things to consider is the max size of the fish
Swimming habits of the fish
The fish's diet
How messy the fish is
Where the fish likes to hang out
How hardy the fish is
how good your tanks equipment is
and make sure it will get along with the other fish/corals/inverts or whatever you may have in your tank.
Just my thoughts..
