Never mind It is 1/2 cup per gallon right?
YES...sort of...How much are you mixing? I have found it is better to mix less salt...when mixing large amounts anyway. Add less you can always add more.

OK, it just seems to me that when I add exactly 1/2 cup per gallon the salinity is too high...i mix with the ro/di, and I have mixed as little as 5g, and as much as 30g with the same results...so I mix low on the salt

I have to add more than half a cup per gallon. Check the SG of the mix. Don't rely on how much per gallon. Check it. You have to match the PH and temp too, before you use the water.
You want your SG at 1.025-1.026. It is best for inverts and is closest to natural sea water.

Isn't that weird how you can get such different results? You need more than 1/2 I need less than 1/2....AND YES check it before you add, temp too and p.h.
I learned that here

Yes! I always check any water going into the tank!
What is your SG reading at half a cup? I used Instant Ocean for awhile. I added more than half a cup then as well. More importantly, what are you using to measure the SG?

If asking me...I use a refractometer...and I have had it read over 1.030
It varies so I mix low, and then adjust..I keep my tanks at 1.025.

Have you had the refrac. calibrated recently? 1/2 a cup is designed to yield 1.021. I've always had to use more then a 1/2cup per gal on every salt I've used (Red Sea, IO, ReefC, Coralife, Trop. M. Pro).

Yeah it's calibrated now...maybe it was off the last time IDK...I just know the last time I mixed water & salt...the salinity was high...maybe it was a fluke who knows...I'll be mixing more this week for a water change next weekend, so I'll see what it comes up then.

Me or her? My salt is not even mixed yet if your asking me.
I was asking both of you. If your salt isn't even mixed yet then test it when you do.

How? I don't see how you can possibly get it to mix at over 1.030 with a half of a cup of salt per gallon, let alone less than half a cup.

Maybe the container that I mix in is off....I think I will take it and add a gallon at a time of water, and remark the conatiners, I have a 5g bucket, a 10g trash can and a 32g trash can...I usually mix to a certain spot.... I must have them marked wrong
that's all I can guess.
I will double check like I said...a gallon at a time...I must have measured the containers wrong the 1st time
.....geez how dumb....that's what happens I guess when you are doing too many things at once...

I have a 32 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck trash can. I add fresh water then add the salt. I test the next day, and adjust as needed. I have a half cup scoop and mound it for each gallon, then add a little extra. It comes out pretty close. I then adjust the SG to 1.025-1.026. I let the water mix for another day after that.

I'm going to remeasure...by hand...not by guesstimating...exactly how many gallons it is to where I fill the pails up....I have a feeling my guess must be way off...I should know by now not to guess huh

Having a 55g almost a year, I do my water changes every 3 days approx. and I have yet to use a heater and powerhead when mixing my salt. I mix it everything up 24 hours ahead of time, every few hours I mix the water myself and before I put the water in, I add hot water to bring the temp up and to also get a correct reading on salinity. Never had a problem yet, so maybe this will some out there who are looking to cut some costs down. Personally, I just have a problem buying all this extra equipment when I can use a little elbow grease.
