Our akita puppy!!
My husband has been wanting one for as long as we've been together and he's coming home in a few weeks so I've really been researching this particular breed. After reading and talking to several breeders, we've decided that this breed is great for our family. She's not ready to come home yet so we have two weeks to prepare for her. She'll be inside so training will start as soon as she walks in the door.

I know. I don't believe in using unnecessary punishment. Positive reinforcement is the only way to go and the only way I train my dogs. I've used this training on multiple breeds and it always works.
Lots of treats and praise.
She's definitely worth the 2 hr trip to get her though. She comes with registration, current vaccinations, vet exam, health certificate, 2 yr health guarantee and travel case.

LOL...what a face, ....
She looks like a little black and white teddy bear. I fell in love with her immediately. The breeder had 12 puppies to choose from and I really like her head shape and markings the best. Very solid. Not really muddled.

Yeah. She's so cute! I can't wait to go pick her up. We're going to have to give her a name... haven't a clue what to name her. Probably won't have a name til we get her home and see how she is.

beautiful puppy...made me think of a little piggy when I saw the body. My ex-girlfriends best friend had one, very loving dogs, but also VERY protective of their people....and theirs got HUGE!

lol Yeah. I can see where you get the piggy. She does look kind of like a spotted. They are protective. Everyone within their "bubble" is ok but everyone outside is considered a possible threat. Good thing my parents live across the street and my grandma comes over all the time. I'll have to teach her who is acceptable to come in the house and who isn't. A female can weigh from 75 to 110lbs easily.

Cute puppy! They are awesome dogs when they are full grown also! Good luck with her!

Very cute.
I am a little confused about the breed. When I wanted renters insurance they gave me a hard time because I had a German shepherd that bit an intruder. They finally gave me insurance, but said there were certain breeds they won't cover. Pit bulls, Rottweiler’s and Akitas. I was shocked at Akitas being on the list, they look like teddy bears. The guy said most bites to children are from Akitas. So I guess a word of caution to concider if you want insurance.
I totally understand about wanting a certain dog for as long as you can remember. I wanted a pure bred shepherd since I was a girl. My only advice...Puppy classes! I paid $60.00 and it was so helpful, my dog is so well trained, he even learned signs so I don't have to speak, or shout if he is too far away. Worth every penny.
I even put him in advance classes to learn agility.
Congratulations on the new puppy...keep us posted with up to date pictures!

100% agree on the puppy classes. Our Shih Tzu and our Sheltie both went to puppy classes and it makes such a HUGE difference. Our Sheltie is still a little defiant/ornery, but I could get our Shih Tzu to leave a steak on the ground if I called him to come. The Sheltie...not so much, she was the "golden child" while we were at the puppy classes...nobody believed us that she was "ornery" at home...she was ALWAYS one of the best in the class, but at home...different story (nothing major, but noticeable).

Our home owners insurances doesn't limit specific dogs. We can have what we want here. Akitas can be great family dogs IF trained that all the humans in their family are pack leaders above the akita. It also takes some training on the kids' part too. The little ones have to learn to be gentle with an akita.

Puppy classes are definitely going to happen. I always take my dogs through at least the puppy class.
Thanks for the recommendations. I do appreciate them.

Don't you just love all the advice that is freely thrown your way?!
Pretty freakin cute dog. And that is coming from someone who has seen his share of puppies.
Pictures are a MUST when you pick that little cutie up.

It's ok. Everyone has their own way of taking care of their dogs. I've had dogs all my life and have bred basset hounds. I'm no stranger to training a dog. Any advice is fine. I'll do what's best for the breed when it comes down to it. Each breed is a little different. I've got an excellent breeder that I'm getting this puppy from and she said if I need any help with the training regiment to just call. I feel confident that I can handle her with positive reinforcement.
She is sooo stinkin cute. I can't get over how adorable she really is. And yes, you have seen quite a share of puppies.
So that's definitely a compliment.
This puppy will probably have her very own thread with updates.
She is definitely going to be very involved in our family. I still haven't told the husband yet. He's going to be soo excited when he comes home to a new akita puppy. If the travel schedule works out, I'll only have her here for maybe a week before he comes home.

The only places that are real strict on rules for dogs here are apartment complexes or certain housing additions. Other than that, every dog is fair game to keep. I live down the street from pit bulls, rotweilers and various other "dangerous" dogs. Notice I put dangerous the way I did. I have been around the different breeds considered as such all my life and haven't had an issue. It's all in how they're raised.

Got a couple more pics of our new puppy. They're not the greatest but her tail is finally curled up in this one.
Paid my deposit today and working on setting up a date to meet and pick up Keiko after I get off of bedrest. So excited!

Looks like pictures of a smuggled Panda. You know "Here it is, now leave $20,000 in unmarked bills at the drop point and you can have the panda."
