I can say why I chose pendants over a fixed length system. If down the road I want a 6' tank, I will only have to buy 1 pendant and use the two I already have. With SE Retros you have a water splashing potential directly on the bulb (unless you put glass there), DE pendants come with UV glass on them since the bulbs don't have one built in like SE. Pendants are available for both SE and DE. I chose DE because there wasn't the a vague note about accommodates UV glass shield. DE has it included with the pendant, because it needs it. Splashing was a concern of mine, I would rather crack a $2 glass cover than a $80 bulb.
As a reefer once said "I don't know how, but I can even spill water on the ceiling"... LOL
yeah, i experienced that on hqi and guess what? what happend was that i bluw the bulb.that's when i was trying to have my lights at 5-6" from water surface.
after i put in a new bulb i raised the light fixture a few inches. to avoid water splashes and that fixed that problem.
