Metal Halide

Does anybody know if there is difference between a double ended metal halide and a srew in metal halide as far as energy use and light color. It is for a 12 gallon nano. Thanks.

This thread is going to explode now. lol
I like DE but mostley for size. Seen plenty of nice set ups with each. I feel most all arguments are bias pitting a generic one of one kind against a high end of the other style. The true important factor are the reflector and the quality of brand and manufacturer. Good brand Kelvin ratings should be right on in either SE or DE. Ligh output, energy effecientcy, and heat is all in the head of the beholder when comparing the high ends against one another. Thats just me

I was going to buy a metal halide retrofit but I do not know if there is a diference between a double ended metal halide and a srew in. Also if I can use a 250 watt ballast on a 70 watt bulb. All information will be greatly appreciated.

There is a ballast assembly difference besides socket.
DE use an HQI ballast
SE use a mogul base socket (or medium) and depending on bulb type a different ballast.

I would not recomend using a 70w bulb on a 250w ballast. You should use the bulb the ballast is meant for.

so it begins, Awesome info for reference when looking at used unidentified ballasts Zman, but the new gauntlet that has been tossed in is- which one is better DE or SE?

ReefForBrains-
I was just answering the "Also if I can use a 250 watt ballast on a 70 watt bulb. All information will be greatly appreciated." question.
I am not partaking in the - which one is better quagmire...
I can say why I chose pendants over a fixed length
system. If down the road I want a 6' tank, I will only have to buy 1 pendant and use the two I already have. With SE Retros you have a water splashing potential directly on the bulb (unless you put glass there), DE pendants come with UV glass on them since the bulbs don't have one built in like SE. Pendants are available for both SE and DE. I chose DE because there wasn't the a vague note about accommodates UV glass shield. DE has it included with the pendant, because it needs it. Splashing was a concern of mine, I would rather crack a $2 glass cover than a $80 bulb.
As a reefer once said "I don't know how, but I can even spill water on the ceiling"... LOL

yeah, i experienced that on hqi and guess what? what happend was that i bluw the bulb.that's when i was trying to have my lights at 5-6" from water surface.
after i put in a new bulb i raised the light fixture a few inches. to avoid water splashes and that fixed that problem.

Are you running DE without the UV glass or are you saying you broke the glass and then the bulb. If it was both, that had to be a tidal wave -LOL
Pictures?
My pendants have water splash marks all over the glass and have to wipe them down occasionally...
