i want everyone out here to make sure that you do not make the samr mistake as i did. i just lost my favorite yellow fang blenny!! i am so discusted with myself. i have had him for 7 months! here is what i did!! i was cleaning my bathroom with pine-sol. and i forgot to wash my hands with anti-bacteria soap. i had to get into the tank to move a few lv rock!! and in a hour he and my royal gramma, and manderin gobie all died!! the only ones that made it was my pajama cardinal, and all my hermits and emarald grab. i tested the tank water and my nitite was red!! for the first time!! so in the future if anyone cleans there house with any kind of chemical?? please wash your hand`s with anti-bacteria soap!!!

I could definately see myself doing something like that without even thinking about it. Thanks for the reminder.

I had my hands inches from the water when I suddenly realized I just splashed on some aftershave cologne. Close call! :nervous:
Don't feel bad, it could happen to anyone. :D

Would washing your hands with antibacterial soap be detrimental as well?
I usually just rinse my hands really well, or if I do use soap I make sure that rinse VERY well. Don't want that little bit of soap I missed to end up in the tank.

yes and no!!! washing your hands with anti-bacteria soap is not as harmful as soaps that are more abbrasive, like lava,ivory,etc... the anti-bacteria makes sure there are NO chemicals on your hands!! and yes!! a little soap could harm them!! but you have to make sure you rinse very well. if you just rinse them with hot water?? you will still have residue on your hands!! thank you all for my loss!!
p.s.!! a skimmer is a better filtering system. but it still would not filter out the chemical in time to save your fish or others!!

Yeah, that sucks!! I am always worried are my hands dirty? But if I wash them then they might be soapy! So, I never stick my hands in my tank. No no only kidding. I too am sorry for your loss.

This was how i got my first 65gal tank.
The previous owner twice put his hands in the tank with grease on his hand from working on the car and killed all his live stock 2 times...
The 3rd time his friend did it and killed everything, so he broke it down and gave it away..and I took it.

So sad to hear about your loss. I also heard that artificial nails are really bad for tanks too. They will kill the fish quite quickly if you put your hand in a tank with those type of nails. Don't know if this is true for sure but I have heard this on several occassions.
