Mixing Clowns

One web-store I visit suggests that tank-bred Clowns can be mixed (meaning, different types of the species) in the aquarium if introduced as juveniles and simultaneously. Does anyone here disagree??

I'm a little doubtful that clownfish will get along. They a territorial and don't like anything they view as compitition. I don't beleive that being born in a tank will change thousands of years of evolution. Just be careful if you decide to try it out and monitor carefully. Many sites will give you information just to sell fish. ( just like a lot of LFS ) Good luck!

it depends on the age of the clowns and tank size i think. i had at one point 2 perculas in with a maroon all about the same size in a 55. they would swim together, until my powerhead sucked up the perculas, but i still got the maroon.

actully i have got a 280 gallon tank and i have 2 clown fish from different breeds(chocolate clown and fire clown), i find that they dont go together. because my tank is big, i have 1 carpet anenome on 1 side and another anenome on the other side, most of the time the fire clown fish is on the left hand side while my chocolate clown is on the anenome of the right hand side...
really i would recomend not to mix clown species. only keep clowns from the same species and the same gender.

what i also think is that it depends on the personality of the fish as well so there's no way to tell unless you try. i also did not have any anemones when ihad my 2 different kinds. also it is impossible to keep clowns of the same gender because they change --- in a single --- environment.

There are entirely to many people who have attempted this and it failed. Clowns don't simply nip each other fins, they are down right nasty. They fight til one dies. They can grow up together, get along fine and then one day outa nowhere for no apparent reason they start fighting. So the "try it and see" advice is, IMO just plain cruel. If their odds were 50/50 or better then I could see it, but we are talking very rare instances that usually consist of odd circumstances where it actually works.
So, no. Don't mix clowns.

Oh, okaaaaay! I won't mix 'em!
:)
EDIT:
I just saw a similar post in the Clownfish forum and someone there suggested you only mix true and false percs, and a perc with gold stripe. The latter is what I was considering...

Just once.
well i wish i could have video taped it for you because they lived together for over a year swiming together. it was 2 perculas and one maroon. the thing that killed the perculas is they were sucked up into my powerhead, by teh way don't buy aquaclear powerheads unless you also buy the attachment that connects to the bottom.

No offense intended at all but I'd be more inclined to believe that the Maroon finally went on a rampage and killed the Percs. Dead fish tend to float to the nearest powerhead intake.

Okay here goes and I know several people will comment that I am lucky and they are probably right. I have a tomato that i have had for 2.5 years. He disappeared one day, I looked everywhere and could not find him. I purchased a pair of clowns for my tank, thinking the tomato clown was dead. I have this crazy as* cat that used to be able to get on top of the tank and catch some of my fish at night, anyway, I moved about 2 months after getting the perculas. Guess what? when I started to break the tank down there was the tomato clown in the filter. Don't know how or when he got there but he had been there for awhile. So the story ends with all of them living in the tank together now for about 8 months with no incidents. I would have loved to trade the tomato but there is not a LFS here that I would take any fish to and trade. They are just not very good at keeping fish I figured I had a better chance at keeping it alive and nursing the tomato back to health rather than he die in some nasty tank that is not taking care of. They each have their own place in the tank and occasionally flutter their tails at each other as a warning. Well there is my 2 cents...not worth a whole lot but it's mine....

I decided an experiment of this nature wouldn't be worth it. I got 2 Oscellarises (from Bali!) and so far...so good.
