mixing salt

I have a 15 gallon tub of mixed water (mixed with reef crystals) I have a power head in the tub and there is no lid on it. How long will this water be good for ? Does it need to be with a power head in it and closed or can it be open and stay usable ? and for how long ?

no1 rule never poor salt into the tank. lol
put it in a bucket(buckets FTW)
and leave it for a day/night to settle down test the saltinaty wth a salt messure aka hydromeater.
if it's in the correct lines safe for marine animals poor it into the tank but i use a filter in my buckets only little ones to keep the movement running around to make sure no salt sits at the bottom power heads would be just as good.
right now i have 4 buckets running at this time with 4 filters (filters cost me £5 each lol.
aslong as water is moving the salt stirs and dissolves properly.
there might be other methods butthis works for me at this point in time.
hope this helped

to be honest that didnt lol my question is how long can u leave mixed water for i have it already in a 15 gallon tub mixing with a hydor koralyia 3 my problem is that there is no lid on the tub and I fear the ph will go down as the days go by.1-is this true ? 2- by putting a lid do i let the water have the oxygen it needs ?
Thanks and thanks for the responses.

The water will be fine for a couple of weeks if you cover it. The powerhead doesn't have to stay but aerate it for a few hours before you use it if it sits for any length of time.

Also reef crystals has a some nitrate comtent as it is when mixed make sure it does get to high as i have seen it go up in amm and nitrate over time so make sure to test it.

I suggest that you also warm it up before placing it in your tank-I have a small cheap heater i place in my 5 gal buckets before I do a change. It takes overnight to warm up the water and avoid shocking your livestock when you pour it in.

good idea. this water is about 60F. i'm going to have to put the water in 2 5 gallons empty salt buckets because i don't have a cover for this tub. ill leave a powerhead and a heater in them. why must it be covered what happends when its uncovered ?

How much are we talking here? 5? 10? 20?

1 - it evaporates and raises salinity.
2 - "stuff" settles in it. Not a horrible thing but it's best not to allow organics to settle in it with no filtration.

I have a great Refractometer, I stopped using a hydrometer a long time ago. plus its more fun
(prob was the best investment I made in this hobby as far as equipment is concerned )
