I was thinking of getting a blue hippo to add to my tank, that only has 2 clowns in it now. and i was def. going to get a yellow tang as my last fish i add further down the road. Should i stick with the blue hippo or a powder blue? because i doubt that i can get all 3, and im having a hard time deciding.
any thoughts are welcome

Well i noticed in your profile it says you have a 55gl and im gonna bet that everyone will tell you thats way to small to house a hippo or a yellow let alone both, which i agree

i was told by what i think is a credible LFS that i can have both if they are small?
at his store in his personal 55g, he has a blue hippo, and yellow tang, and they are about 3 years old and seem to be fine

well i dont wanna sound mean or anything but i wouldnt be goin back to that lfs if they gave you that info.. you might be able to get by with it for a little while when there small but i dont recommend it. im pretty sure that hippo will get 10-12in. and i kno the 55 i have is only 12in. wide.. the tang might be ok but as for long term i'd say no because tangs like alot of swimming room

Hello Vsecret,
Just so it dosnt seam like only Rigdon87 is the only one saying this, yes tang can start out in smaller tanks, but for the long term they will need a tank that is 6' long. So unless you are planning to upgrade you tank or give the fish away, all tangs are not going live a long happy life in a 55gal. Sorry for the bad news.

The Hippo can grow to be 12" long, the Powder Blue Tang can reach about 9" long and the Yellow Tang can get around 8" long. If you expect to have them for full grown show size, than NO they will not be ok in a 55 gallon. If you want to house a tang in a 55, I would be looking to upgrade to a bigger tank. If you want to house a tang temporarily in a 55; For a single tang look to upgrade when the tang reaches around 6", For the 3 tangs you are talking about I would recomend to upgrade when they reach 4". If you are NOT going to upgrade or rehome the tangs when/if they reach these sizes you might start to have problems. The tank is just to small to house a tang, let alone 3 of them. Either way good luck.

Most max growth size given is not what the home aquarist will encounter. If some one has a 12” hippo in a tank under 120g I would love to see a pic of that big boy

I personally would not put any fish that can reach more than 6" long (unless you know for a fact that it is going to be temporarily). Also that size depends on the type of fish. I would recomend Dwarf Angels (2), Clownfish (maybe 3), but it comes down to what you like. For examle I am some one who loves Damsels. I currently have a Niger Trigger (temporarily) with 3-Damsels ini a 55.

Very true and a good point. The Hippo Tang (if it does reach 12" long) I would recomed at a minimum to be housed in a tank that has dimesnions of 72"(long)x30"(front to back)x36"(tall). With these dimensions, you would need minimum 336 gallon tank. Also note that I have yet to see any Tang that is 12" inches or bigger. The biggest Tang I have ever seen is 9", Hippo Tang by the way.

That depends on what else is in the tank. I go by the allocated gallons for fish rule as starters. Two tangs in a 55 gives you 27 ½ gallons per fish minus what you loose in displacement
