I quit counting, its easier to enjoy the hobby that way! No seriously, I had $1000.00 before I bought the first fish in a 55gal w/ a RO/DI system. Probally $1500.00 in livestock w/ refugium, UV sterlizer, all the tests, etc. Traded $500.00 worth of Discus for some of that livestock and sold a 55gal and a 30gal hex later on so that helped some($300.00). Kids have a 20gal FW apiece so they got the livestock dividy up between them out of the 30 hex. 9 months later looking to upgrade to a 125gal, so here we go again!
Anybody want to buy a Z28, just kidding luv it almost as much as the fish!

ha! i've yet to meet a rich person who cares about the hobby. it seems to be all poor people who barely support themselves by taking care of other's tanks.

If you read my profile, you'll see it doesn't pay money but the rewards are great to be w/ my kids after being on the road for 10yrs Truckin'. My wife got a little chunk when the store she managed for 8 yrs sold out and she made the mistake of telling me that I could build a reef for my Xmas present. I also buy and sell cars, but most of that goes into the shop. Like I've said before I've always had exotic birds and fish and liquidated alot of the FW to contribute to the SW. Heck after you watch a $500.00 bird fly away or a $5000.00 motor destroyed you can pretty well handle anything monetary. BTW the bird was found and given to a good home. Didn't want the bird police to get their feathers ruffled

About $5000 to this point and thats being very frugal (building stand, modding skimmer, lookin for deals, etc..) If I were to purchase everything from LFS, plug and play, $10,000 easy.
Yes, and you even have to factor in paying that nice (butt crack) electrican to install a dedicated line...

I have about 3000 into my 60 , but it's not the cost that i like to think about! It's the look on peoples faces when they stand in front on my tank, OMG that's alive , OMG look at that! That's amazing!
It's like the freakin Albuquerque Aquarium in here!
Now that's just priceless!

Sometimes it's just easieer to get it where you can rather than spend time shopping around. My tank (90 gallon) with oak stand, canopy with flourscent lights was just $495. That was a good deal because I did look around quite a bit before buying that one and I checked online and ads for used ones.

i agree , if you have money set aside or the money to throw around then some people say yes why not..
IMO and a personall opinion i have the money to buy things but its more fun to build stuff for my tank than buy it and just throw money around.. its the small things in this hobby i really appreciate

I don't throw money around but I did shop around for the major purchase of the tank and stand then went back to the first place which was the cheapest. I've been looking at the auction site for a large one but don't want to spend the money right now. It's nice just to look.

Let's see:
500.00 for already set up 90 gallon
500.00 on coral, salt, test kits and cleaner crew.
I really wish I had taken the time to write down what I spent what on... oh well.
Love,
A

I hope my SO never reads this post....
LOL, but I'm guessing in about 6months I've dropped about 8k on 3 tanks with another 10-12k for 3 more tanks that are planned as soon as our new home is ready which should be in another 2 months. My published cost to friends and family is about 2k
The above listed cost also includes livestock and corals which with the newest 125 should be around 2k per tank spread out over several months

I have spent $140 for all of my stuff - tank, stand, LR, LS, fish, coral, critters, filters, skimmers, etc. Sometimes It does pay to watch the classified ads. I did spend another $90 on a water test kit, food and supplements.

I got my tank and stand for free, but i am refurbishing the stand--$45 in supplies for a 75 gallon.
equipment for the 75 is in around 1100 though, including LS (prebought).
in my 20 gallon, i have $50 worth of LR, 2 percs (tank raised, and one is definitely the b!tchy female already) $30, got the filter, heater, thermometer, and aqua pump for b-day presents.

Ive had my 72g bowfront for under a week .. and ive spent around $2000 Canadian ( that an estimate... ill figure it out later) ... i dont even have lights yet ... and just rocks and water in it now
I have the glass aquarium, matching stand, heater, ehiem filter, refractometer, salt, rocks, water...still have to get EVERYTHING else... but my LFS has a pretty good points system .. and I could cash in for a $100 credit .. but im holding out for $500!
