Our LFS has a one for sale and he is BEAUTIFUL!!! However from what I have read they DO NOT eat in captivity. Have anyone kept one successfully and how hard are they to keep?

Very hard...Unelss you have a 400+gal system with I'd say around 500lbs of LR...I wouldn't even attempt it..Well that's what im using anyway...

All types of things..mainly frozen formula 1&2, Angel Diet w/sponges, mysis, some flake food, nori, krill.
You also have to feed them 4 times a day....so that puts a huge load on your system.
And thier water has to be PERFECT..not close...PERFECT, and stable...and i mean STABLE.
300gal is min. for them
***Important Note: I built this tank from the ground up to house an Idol. I have well over $15k invested. This is not for the weak of wallet :)

Yes but the lfs only needs to keep them alive for a week or two

That's the key, most fish can survive a short period of time not eating...so by the time you get it, it's weak and dies...LFS only have to worry about a week or soo...

Maybe this is the norm for most LFS but ours have had a Moorish Idol now for 5 weeks and someone has paid for it. However they will not release it to the owner until they have it eating
I think this is pretty good service
I love our LFS :jumping: :jumping:

Ya mine did the same for me...
Although once you move it...you really have to start again trying to feed it....
Mine was feeding fine at the LFS for weeks...when i brought him home, nothing for amost a week.
They can go on hunger strikes if they dont like thier environment.. Also too I want to try and get a male and a female, Idols have life partners.

right you guys got it with the LFS ... besides the size of the tanks they are in... the other thing is all of their tanks are linked up.. so they may be in a 20 gal enclosure.. but... in about 1,000+ of water

I tried to keep a pair about 25 yrs. ago I had no problem getting them to eat but they kept getting parasites of some sort. I would treat for it and they would get quite stressed during the treatment. When it cleared up they would bounce back real quick, but it only lasted about a week and they would get the parasites back. I finally gave up and brought them back where I got them from. Beautiful fish, but I would strongly advise against buying one. SW65 I envy you, without a doubt these ARE the most beautiful fish in the hobby IMO, what do yours eat?

We have a 55gallon right now and in the process of transferring over to a 155gallon bowfront. So far we have spent over $5,000.00 on our 55. I don't even want to think what we will be putting into the 155
Anyway we Love the hobby and think it is worth every cent!

How long you had your Moorish Idol?

Almost a year.
Like I said...300 is MIN for a Idol..they are just BIG...
If one of my pics you can see how big it is compared to my Emporer angel. The angel is about 6-7inch long

It is estimated that Moorish Idols have a 99% death rate in the home aquarium. Man y will eat and one day simply die...and the end comes swiftly.
Some will report success for about a year and they then will suddenly one day just die.
A fish that is better left in the ocean. As long as folks continue to buy them suppliers will continue to catch them and offer them to retailers.
Many will die for the rare one that will come along and thrive in the home aquarium.
Your odds for success are probably less than 1%...still want to buy one?

That is 1% in a perfect conditioned Aquarium
So in anything less you cut your percentage down even further...Basically you got a better chance of winning the lotto!

I just bought a Moorish Idol today at my LFS. Its about 4 inches long. It is currently acclimating. Its looking pretty good though! I am doing a VERY slow drip acclimation, just to be safe.
