4 years ago I picked this tank out of the newspaper(the bad part about the deal was I dint have a clue what all the gizmos and gadgets that came with the tank so i thew away what I know now was about $1k worth of salt water filtration pumps skimmer sump oh yah all of it trash
....I was such a newb) and had it set up as a fresh water shark tank. About 3 years ago I decided that I needed salt water....
After finding out what I needed I started with the basics and have stopped there as for not having a lot of extra income.
This is what i have come up with....

Looking good so far love the foxface and piccasso trigger.
Your tank needs more live rock IMO.
I know I have been buying a $20-$30 chunk of live rock once a month. Have to many bills and not enough disposable income. That is why I haven't gotten more live stock than what I have.

I would have to say around 30-40 pounds of live rock.

welcome
love it bro! really nice! and nice helmets

After running out of room for all my gear, I have found the top of the tank works perfect for a helmet holder.

Just wondering if some of the darker rock was lava rock at all -- really hard to tell with the background paper on the tank. If it's lava rock it can leach elements in your water you don't want -- if it's live rock your good... but I just can't tell and thought I'd throw it in just in case.
Looking good but the tank wallpaper takes away from the beauty of your fish IMO :D

Noticed the two hawkfish. Did you buy them as a pair, or just get two and they happen to get along('ish
)?

I dont know if it is lava rock looks like it ... It was a donation from a friend who had it in his tank for a couple of years. It has been in mine for 3 years it hasent killed any thing yet...

As for a back ground I needed some thing busy until I can get my tank set up the way I want it. Other wise it is to plain.

One hawk fish I bought. The other was given to me, they fought hard for a week then after that they got along.

Funny user name for a motorcycle rider btw -- cracks me up

The name was given to me when I was 13-14 years old by my baby bro giving me a hard time about Counter-strike. I sucked badly at the game. so he was teasing me "that I was a bloodsmear on his screen" It stuck.

Lava Rock is really light in comparison to Live Rock. Probably won't matter unless you ever get into corals but if it is lava rock -- to be safe I would take it out -- but after 3 years with fish you sound safe there.
Yeah once you get fully aquascaped it won't look so plain :)
Looking good though!

Now that I have introduced my self to you guys, I have the need for more information from you.
All of my local fish supply stores just want to sell me the most expensive stuff telling me that I NEED IT ...
This is what I have as far as filtration, I have been using this method for 3 years now. With the whole intention to step it up but have not had the chance.
2X cascade 1000 canister filters
16 watt uv filter
a big dual output air pump feeding 2 18" big-bubble wands
40#s of live rock (I know I need more)
Now the Question I have for all of you :
1: What would you add for filtration?(The main goal is corrals)
2: I have a spare 40 gallon tank sitting around to make a sump, But what do I need to to do that? I am handy with my hands to make most of the simple stuff as far as baffles and what not. I just need to know how to do it.

I'm not a canister filter fan but they're ok I guess.
IMO the UV sterilizers kill everything good or bad --- but don't do enough of the killing the bad to justify them in a main display tank.
Bubbles in a saltwater tank are bad -- take the bubble wands out.
Really a sump with macro algae, live rock, water changes are about all you really need. A protein skimmer (quality one) is a very big plus though .
Making baffles you can just silicone in some glass baffles once you decide how you want your chambers set up.
Always beware someone trying to sell you something ;)

I now have added 40 more pounds of LR. Now to figure out how to stack it. Should I make one big pile on one side, or make two small piles on each side, or lay it all flat in a line down on the bottom of the tank?
