thanks for pointing that out about the marinelands. but i just thought the LED's were easier to maintain and all that. but im really just looking for a good light fixture that will pretty much work with most corals......
Quality LED fixtures have been proven to not only give color but good growth. They also put a lot less heat in the water and can reduce the electric bill. Not only that, but with halide bulbs you have to replace them once a year... at about $75 for a good bulb x2... = $150 a year. Whereas a good LED fixture will last a minimum of 10 years and does not need any bulbs replaced during that period... Do the math...
2x LED Fixtures = $1000. Energy used per month = ~$20 x 10 years = $2400. Total Investment = $3400
2x Halide retrofit kits with bulbs= $500+ $150 per year for bulbs x10 years = $1500. Amount of energy used 2x bulbs per month =$40 x 10 years = $4800. Total Investment = $6800 over the course of 10 years. Give or take... (not highly accurate by any means. Energy use depends on wattage and amount of hours on.)
That's a difference of $3,400 in the long run - money that you would be saving... If you got the money to spend or the time to save - a quality LED fixture is probably worth the investment.

Honestly, the lights can wait until you are ready to add corals. I have a really good feeling that after MACNA the prices are going to drop on some of the fixtures.

I was going to go, but I can't my store manager is going to Disney that week and I have to man the store. :(
Sorry for the hi-jack.
But seriously, I would get a cheapo strip light if the tank did not come with one. This will allow you to save up for a better fixture. Also, it is good to start off FOWLR (fish only with live rock). This way you can cycle the tank and get your feet wet. Once you can afford the fixture you want, get it and start adding corals.

thanks guys thats pretty much all i need to hear on the lights since i guess i willl just plan on a FOWLR for the first part until i get a hang of manning a bigger tank....
since my nano reef is a huge difference between them. the ecotech's were really nice but they are pricey and since i will need 2 of them i really dont know. ill keep looking and hopefully find a solution soon.
