I bought 35 lbs of uncured, and 5 lbs cured live rock today.

I have 80 lbs fine fiji sand in the mail.
I am definately not looking forward to taking all the rock out, taking the CC out and restacking all the rock
but, I guess it will all pay off when I have it finished.

here are some pics.
full shot

new 35 lbs

You will want a variety of inverts for a cleanup crew. If you look at the reef packages they sell on this site it will give you some ideas. You can either go with one of those crews or you could design your own. You are going to want some snails (both turbo and nass.), possibly some hermit crabs, as well as possibly some other crabs like emeralds. There are many other possibilities so be creative if you would like.

Im a big fan of snails only. I do have about 3 hermits still in my Dt, but most hermits are in my fuge. I do have 3 small emerald crabs in the display tank.
For snails: Cerith snails are by far my favorite. astrea (or turbo) and nassarius snails are good too. those are the three species that are good to mix imo I also have nerite which are good and look cool.
Variety is key because some eat different algae than others.

Im very new to this so I have a swich for the blue actinics, a swich for my normal 65 watts and a swich for my moonlights......
I bought a timer and am setting it up. How long exactly would you recommend leaving them on?
Thanks, Luke

Most people have their lights on for 8-12 hours a day. I run my actinics on for 10 (12:30-10:30) and my daylights on for 8 (1:30-9:30).

Does your timer allow you to control one set of lights or two? Also, how many power cords does your light have?
I am running the Coralife power center that has two timers and my lights have 3 seperate cords (1 for atinics, 1 for daylights and one for the moonlights.) I just leave all my switches on the lights on and switch power on and off to the cords via the timers.

If the stuff is hard and requires scraping to come off - it's coraline.
If it is slimy and easily wiped off, it's more likely cyanobacteria.

I wouldn't worry too much yet. You'll have many different "new tank syndromes". As the tank matures, the less problems you'll have. But the biggest things are making sure your do your regular maintenance stuff - water changes, etc. Other things - increasing flow to reduce dead spots, decrease lighting periods, and reducing waste in your tank - feeding less, etc. To make things easier, Just use the search option above and search titles for "cyanobacteria". You'll find a hundred threads about it.
