This is sounding more and more like a Griswald trip to me. Isn't the Largest Ball Of Twine somewhere along the way?
There is the largest cross and largest prarie dog statue...and this ball of twine rings a bell...

ok we will be taking the 20 to the 10 to the 8 - he used to drive trucks and said it would be the quickest way

That rules out route 66 and everything on my travel list other than Pueblos, mesas, Julian and the desert flowers.
Quick does not facilitate sight seeing.

I just realized that I never mentioned the desert flowers, which are beautiful after desert rains, which I believe occured this year. (run on sentence)

Congrats on the relationship Jenny!!!
What part of Texas are you? Hubby drives a race hauler for a living and when they go to southern CA (in Vegas now, but went to LA last week) they take the southern route instead of I-40. They head south west from Dallas to El Paso and from there to New Mexico and Arizona. That is the preferred way especially this time of year when you never know if you end up getting snow around Flagstaff AZ.

The 8 is a beautiful drive coming in over the hills. Especially this time of year. I lived in SD for 10 years and I miss it everyday. El Cajon is not far from downtown at all. I would definately hit up...
1. Sea World
2. San Diego Zoo
3. Birch Aquarium (Run by UCSD, has a cool shark tank outside)
4. Coronado is the best place to go to the beach. The hotel del and the history there is awesome. You can also watch the Navy planes flying into North Island. I worked on Coronado for 5 years and loved every minute.
5. You are only about 2 hours from Disneyland, but it will be crowded over spring break if yours falls over easter.
6. Check out Ocean Beach and Mission Beach
7. Do yourself a favor and go to Old Town and eat at el coyote....
8. Get a burger in Ocean Beach at Hodads
9. Eat at Filipes in Little Italy, you won't be disapointed!
