Had a Christmas cookie party for my son and the neighborhood kids tonight, and one of the moms brought a space heater for the garage to keep warm and smoke.Well it overloaded the circuit.I went down to reset the circuit breaker but it didn't trip and i found it odd that some other lights and outlets scattered throughout the house where out and some where live.Nothing was zoned off.Not by room ,not by floor i even found some outlets that worked in rooms with no power to the light. So i tried to reset the breaker anyway and no power ,so i shut it off, called a electrician friend and he said he would come in the morning.
Well this turn of event effectively ended the cookie party and everyone went home.I put my son to bed checked on my daughter that had surgery on Monday and went to take the garbage out.Im outside and i smell smoke and start thinking about the electrical problem and cant tell if its heat or smoke coming from my chimney and roof vent.I run back inside the house pop open the attic scuttle and my attic is filled with smoke.I am so glad i went outside because you could'nt smell anything inside.I yell to my wife that the house is on fire grab the boy and call 911 i grab my daughter and out we go.Im so thankful we weren't a sleep because where the fire was we would have been going out the second floor window if we woke up at all. Here is the fried wire and damage.

The fire dept.tore down the ceiling grid and sofit in the utility room and this is what i found....The poster child of how not to wire a house.Who ever did this should be shot, hung and shot again.I cant believe this passed inspection if it was done when the house was new.

I don't use space heaters. If I have pay extra to heat my whole house, so be it.

Wow Veni, that could have been deadly. Good job catching that thing before you went to bed.

Fortunately everyone's OK. I hate hearing stories like this... but I have to admit, I'm a bit relieved that it wasn't aquarium related.

I would poke some fun at you but I'll do that later. I'm glad you're ok.

WOW!!! thank god you and your family is safe!
I was a home inspector for 7yrs about 15yrs ago , and yes if it was inspected that person should be held accountable to say the least! Back when I was doing it you had to know what you were doing. Now our Gov. got involved and all you have to do is pay them their "fees" and whala...your a inspector. What a shame! I hope you find out if there was a "inspector" involved. Ask theyour realtor , if the house was inspected you can find out with a little homework. Good luck and again thank God you are all ok

After our fire in the middle of the night it took me forever to sleep restfully. Every smell had me up sniffing around.... not a good thing in the middle of winter when everyone has their fireplaces going. Things still aren't as peaceful as they use to be.... it always happens to someone else. Reality hit me hard that my name that day was Someone Else.
Glad you're okay.

Glad everyone is okay Veni.
Seemed like the firefighters knew exactly what to do though and when straight for the wires?
