I got my new tank now its time to get it setup. Its a 135 glasscage 72X18X25 duel overflow and return. 2" overflow and 1 1/2" return. I picked up a 29 Gal tank to build a sump/refuge 181/2 X 12 X 30. First thing is how tall should the baffels be inside the sump:notsure: and how big should the Refuge be. I am going to build the stand pipes today. Hopefully it will be up and running by the first of the year. Second how big of a pump will i need for thre return:thinking: I will be useing some sand and LR from my 75Gal to help cycle at some time i will want to add soft cora but for now it will be FOWLR.
I know i will have more questions as i go everyone here has been a great help. Here are a few pictures.

Savage,
I have the same 29g tank I am thinking of making into a sump/refugium. I would also like ideas. on how to set it up. I am however only using it for a 75g. With ideas of incresing to a 120-180 within the next year or so.(maybe never, who knows)

Thats the link where I posted my questions. DIdnt want to hijack your post Savage.

Baffle height should be determined by your skimmer.
Skimmers run optimally at a desired water level. I would suggest you get your skimmer first and then decide on how tall to make the baffles accordingly.
If you can run an external return pump(preferred) try an Iwaki. They last darn near forever, don't use too much power, are quiet and won't heat your water.

youre going to probably have a pretty big pump pumping water through that bulkhead, id say leave it, or if you want a bit more pressurized water return, reduce to 1".

Will it work if i reduce it to at the top with a 3/4" Loc-Line Fittings. If so how will that effect the pump:notsure: and can i put a Y in it so i can have 2 returns on each side. after i get this fig. out my next step is a external pump.

You "probably" should be using the larger bulkhead/hole for the overflow drain and the smaller for the return...
Always want to be able to drain more than you pump in...
Then the return would "fit in the 1 1/4" gap at the top of the overflow...

It's not too late i'll change them over and use the larger hole for the overflow. what about the 3/4" Loc-Line Fittings idea can i run 2 off of each and what size pump should i get :notsure:

When figuring flow and picking pumps and equipment, it's always best to look at the "big picture" and reverse engineer, rather than shoot from the hip with a "Mag 12 and 1" line" generic responce...
The things to look at are...What's the "Goal Flow" for the tank...? ....Reef(SPS or Softie)... Fish Only, (Sea Horses and Box Fish or Tangs and Groupers)...?
Then, is all flow coming from Sump Return or will you have "supplemenatl" powerheads or C/L system...??
What is the size of the sump chamber...?
(Too much flow in too little space creates turbulance and bubble problems)
And then, What are the overflows "rated at" how many linear inches (across the top of OF chambers) and what size of standpipe and drain lines are you using...?
(Need to know "how much" we can get "out" of tank...)
