My new 55 gallon reef tank

The brittle worm and the snail are still doing well. The brittle worm comes out and moves around a little now. It seems he/she is active at night or when the room is dark. Is that when they like to move around. Otherwise he/she stays in the branch rock. Any ideas?

I think I will go with the hard cycle. This way all the levels can spike and I know the tank won't go thru mini cycles. Any suggestions.
IMO that is the best way to cycle a tank...That way it takes the guess work out of it when it's done you will know it's done. Have you given thought as to what way you are going to take your tank after your cycle?

First I would like to go with several different types of corals. I also like the anemone's that sway in the current. Of course we will have to have "Nemo and Dori". My wife wants one of the blue star fish and one orange one. But I will have to do more research to see if they are compatible. I can see that anything that you want to do in this hobby requires research. (and the assistance of fellow hobbyist on here) It is nice that we are all willing to help each other. I am going to try to do my part to assist,, although it will take a while as I am also new.

You don't want to replace the media, you want to rinse HALF of the media every 2 weeks MAX. You replace HALF the media every 3 months. For the Fluval 305 at least. I agree, I wish I hadn't gotten the canister filter, but I'm just going to have to work with it for now.
lol WHAT?! ok let me tell you from experience. i had 2 canister filters on my 65 gallon. 1- 404, 2- eheim POS! before i joined any forums, i listened to my LFS, and rinsed half of the media every 1-2 weeks etc and what did i get? HAIR ALGAE LOTS AND LOTS OF IT! 65 gallon, 60 - 70 lbs of LR covered in HAIR ALGAE. With only 5 fish - 2 FP, 2 damsels, 1 purple fridmoni, 1 lunare wrasse, trates were at 80-90 for 4 months straight. I did 20-30% water changes a week and guess what no change at all. in my opinion, canister filters are great, but for fresh water setups. I had to scrub every piece of LR in my tank, buy god knows how many turbos, do a 75-90% water change to save my fish. Oh i forgot to add, I chucked my canister filters in the garbage, and put on a 25 gallon fuge. My tank has never look this good i am actually somewhat proud of it. I made a fuge in my center chamber of my nano, trates, trites, amm all at 0. Refugiums and sumps are the way to go. My 65 may not look so great but if you saw it before, man would you be disgusted.

Forget Dory (blue hippo tang) 55g is too small....don't know about starts. I'd probably only get one, but I think your tank has to be more established

I've run a heavily stocked tank for a couple of years ( 125 gallon ) and never once had hair algea. Your problem wasn't the canisters but something else.

I agree canister would not cause hair alage unless you never cleaned it and it just continued to pump excess nutrients into your tank, sounds like a lighting issue or overfeeding as well. Anyhow back to the original posterA blue hippo (dorri) is deffinately a no go nemo, sure even two of them No blue stars, you have to be really carefull with starfish as alot of there diet is unknown The linkia's need a minimum of 100 pounds of live rock to eat some type of surface slime that is part of there diet, maybe a red serpent star would work a little better. Good luck.

I agree that it had to be something other than the canister filters. I have seen some very nice tanks that have filters on them. If you would have noticed earlier in the thread, I am going to add a 20 gallon sump/fuge. As far the tank being established more, it will be. I am in no rush to stock it. I have a lot more research to do before that. I appreciate everyones advice on the fish. That will help me with my research. Thanks.

I've been told some starfish eat coral. So if you are planning to add coral, be careful of starfish. I do think there are a few types that are ok to add to a tank with coral in it. Not sure which types, as I don't keep any starfish, except those little hitchhiker guys and sometimes I even pull them out.
I think some brittle stars are ok. I'm sure someone will chime in if you mention more about starfish.

I don't know but it sounds like it was more then your canister, I've run one for a while now and never a problem. Sounds like you had a real nightmare on your hands glad to hear your tank is better.

I think I did ok with the outage. Luckily I didn't have anything in the tank yet. But it all tested well. The clean up crew made it through ok. I got the lights on. Looks great. I got the red mushroom corals in the tank. They appear to be doing ok. The crabs and snails are very active. Probably have to wait till this week to go after the clowns. $ Did you find any fans
