Is this normal??? the trigger fish took a nap in hole in the rock. While he was sleeping, the starfish came along, trapped the trigger fish in the rock and sucked out the trigger fish's guts.

I've never heard of a starfish killing a trigger like that. I would think if anything the trigger would kill the starfish..... Are you sure the trigger was healthy? Usually when inverts prey on fish the fish is not healthy or dying or already dead.......

Maybe he was dead, but he wasn't showing any signs of being sick yesterday. He often sleeps in that hole, so everything seemed to be normal. He might have been sleeping a little more than usual - that would be the only sign that he may have been sick. Most of the evidence, however, indicates that this was a homicide.

hang on, don't call the police yet......your star didn't kill him.
We have had our star for 2 years and has never killed anything.
the trigger was probably sick and lodged himself in the rock.
CC star will eat (or try to) a dead fish. We had a coral beauty for awhile and seemed healthy. One day he went missing. "Chip"
hadn't moved in awhile, so we moved him off the rock and sure enough, there was the fish and Chip was trying to eat him.
Fish will sometimes die without us visually seeing them sick.
Sorry for your loss :( but your star was just doing what a carnivore does. They will eat up your reef, but doubt a moving fish. How long did you have the trigger?
hope you were kidding on killing him.....if you really don't want him give him to your LFS

I would have to agree! Chocolate chip stars are scavengers that prey on dead or decaying things! Your trigger was on it way out in all probability

Thanks for all your expert testimony. The trigger fish has been in the tank for about a month or two. Sleeping in that hole, he was easy prey for the starfish, but it sounds as though he only likes dead or dying fish. The starfish also ate a shrimp one time, but we think the shrimp died first. Based upon all the circumstances and lack of proof that the trigger fish was alive when the starfish began eating him, I have decided to drop all charges on the starfish.

WHEW!! Thanks........I though I was going to have to start a
"Save the starfish campaign".:D ;)
you might want to give him some little pieces of shrimp to eat.
Ours love it.

Yes, don't worry... the starfish will live to see another day - it's my roommates tank anyway, so I couldn't kill him even if I wanted to. The starfish gets well fed - my roommate feeds him frozen shrimp and he loves it. That's why it was so surprizing to see him chowing down on "Humu" - that was his name, I think. We are holding a small memorial service for Humu tomorrow if any of you want to come... just e-mail me for directions. The starfish will not be there, so you can bring your fish.

LOL we will throw the fish in a smaller tank and come. ;)
When our coral beauty died after over a year of having him, it was really bothersome to see Chip chowing down on him.
I think your Humu looked bigger than our coral.
The cc stars are fun to watch, very busy in the tank.
once again...sorry for your loss :(

Thanks for your compassion -- we will be mourning his loss for quite a while. Sorry about what Chip did to your coral beauty. I know that I am going to get slammed for saying this, but those circumstances also sound very suspicious. It seems like a huge coincidence that both your coral beauty, and our Humu were both seemingly perfectly healthy before being being eaten by our starfish. How did you rule out foul play?
I agree, the starfish is fun to watch. You should have seen him last night after his big meal - it looked like he was doing a 100 yard dash across the sand! I am thinking about setting up a camera just in case any other fish go mysteriously missing.
Thanks for the memories "Humu" and "coral beauty"!

Na, it wasn't your startfish. or mine...... if you look a many posts around here, people are asking all the time why their seemingly
perfectly healthy fish died suddenly. Unfortunately, it happens, they go through a lot before they get in our tanks and one hope with our TLC they live a long and happy life. :)
Isn't is amazing how fast they move? Our friends are always amazed at one minute Chip looks completely still and the next minute he is on the other side of the tank. We really love it when he comes to the top and lays outward like he is sunnng himself.
We think he is begging for shrimp, he is a pig! ;)

OK. I'll take your word for it, even though this seems like this might explain some of those mysterious deaths.
The starfish flies!! When my roomate first got it, I thought it was just one step above a piece of coral - I didn't know it had like a thousand legs!!! It doesn't even have eyes, yet it knows where all the tasty treats are, to top it all off, it LOVES to sunbathe!
Here's another slight problem that migh explain how Humu died. There's a domino damsel in the tank called "Domino". Domino looks like he has a very light white frosting on his body - almost like a Krispy Kreme, but much less frosting. We started to notice this frosting a few weeks ago - it started looking like microscopic white specs. Otherwise, he seems healthy and eats more than anyone (except the starfish). The wrass keeps picking at him and tearing up his fins, which pisses him off because he's too slow to take a chunk out of the wrass. Is this normal? My roommate said it might be Ick, but prolly not because it's been a few weeks now. None of the other fish, including Humu, had any frosting - Domino is the only frosted fish in the tank.

uh oh....:( You might want to post a question in the disease forum. Tell them about Humu's passing and Domino's slime. Explain the slime and specs and give the water readings too. the dreaded ich might be the culprit.
Or there is another disease called brookinella (spell). I am NOT
a disease expert, but have been around and read of others troubles. Beth and Terry are the experts and will help you.
Also tell them who all is in your tank too.
Good luck, let me know what happens.

Oh no! I will get the water readings from my roommate and post all the info in the disease forum. In the mean time, I am asking for all of your prayers. Domino has been in the tank longer than any other fish. Morale is already pretty low in the tank because of Humu's recent tragic loss... If we lost Domino I think the clown fish, who's name is Nimo, might try to take his own life.

I had similer problem and lost Cardinal,Maroon awhile back Same thing like yours.
So I tested to see if it is starfish with 2 black mollies and a goby in fuge. I wasn't able to get any pics of it, but all i have in fuge now is only starfish. So IME I would say get ridd of starfish or put it by it self.

Wingit...........did you see Ophiura's reply? I think she is the starfish guru. Seems there was a problem with system and some posts were lost. She stated same as me about CC star. She said to post your readings and let her know about your tank. CC star will not go after a fish such as yours unless sick or dead.
