Just my two cents....When I see a coral I like, I buy it if I can afford it....I don't care if it's a tiny frag or a huge happy one, because I may not see that coral again for years. I have had so many beautiful pieces gone that I never found again. I'm not bargain hunting, I'm building my chunk of the ocean. I take great joy in watching my corals and other critters grow and flourish, I also enjoy the occasional insanity of getting something draw dropping beautiful.
A fish tank that looks awesome today, may be sick next week..... and the sick messed up tank could clear up and be great in a few short months. Our tanks are living systems, they change constantly and that's why I love it.

Don't you hate it when that happens....I found this beautifil huge lettuce coral that would have looked great across the ridge of my rock work, I asked about the coral and LFS guy said more than I could afford..I assumed that was true and didn't inquire further, I figured it was a show piece and he didn't want to sell it.
A few days later it was gone.....it sold for $95.00
I would have gladly paid that. The LFS guy really thought $95.00 was too much to spend on a coral.... shoot, I buy online and after shipping the $60.00 coral always costs me near a $100.00 bucks. When I say across the ridge of my rocks....I am talking near 3 foot....I have not seen anything like it since...LOL..I promised myself to sell blood plasma if I have to, but don't let a prize coral slip through my fingers again.

Wow... what a fail on that guy's part? I hate when people automatically assume. But I guess I'm guilty of that as well working in retail.... -__-;
Flower - there must not be a good lfs near by since you buy alot from online.

Well I have the Petland, those people...don't get me started...Petland does carry salt mixes and suppliments, I got a nice cleaner shrimp from them.....their coral is covered in hair algae, no I won't buy fish from there either...I watched how they treated new fish when they arrive...talk about stress, poor fish...I'm surprised they have anything alive to sell.
Then there is a ***** but they don't sell very much for saltwater, not all Petcos carry SW fish, and mine is one of them. There is one Mom and Pop LFS across town but again not much SW stuff, they do have second hand tanks, stands and some equipment too....I go there for bargains..They have old skimmers, dry rock and old lights
There is a very nice store in Fox lake called Something Fishy, They don't carry skimmers, Seachem test kits or MH bulbs, they will order it...but I can order it. They will trade coral and fish for in store credit, so if I have a critter that grew too big for the tank, or a coral that had to be fragged...That's where I go, and I can trade for a critter (coral) I want.
I shop mostly online because I like the guarantee SWF offers, and some other sites...(can't mention them) LFS do not have a guarantee at all...if the fish goes belly up as you walk out the door...oh well.
The equipment selection is endless online...the web always has someplace with what I'm looking for, so I don't have to just make do with whatever is being sold in stores. Shopping online is awesome for a SW hobbyist.

It's true, web does have the best selection on equipment but live stocks, I'm little hesitant because I'm a type of person who likes to see their things first before purchasing it...
Stinks that you have to deal with those chain stores with nothing with un caring employees...
I'm very lucky to have a very good LFSs around me competing for my dollar.
Very good selection 2 times new shipments every week and very eager and helpful people.
Owner's son is my friend and he gives me discounts and free RO water.

I wish I had that. My LFS stink. I maybe perusing them to do. I am on the hunt for an interesting/odd fish for my 16 gallon tank. I have not been able to find what I am looking for online (at least from a store that I am willing to give my money). There was one time I ordered a fish online and did not get the one I ordered (or thought I ordered).

yea, I guess Florida is one of the better places for fish and coral shipments. Even SWF is based in South West Florida and so far i was lucky to meet very nice people albeit some weren't very knowledged and gave bad advises... but you live and learn.
My whole coral setup including the lights didn't pass $300 yet.

WOW!!! I know have spent at least 5 times that just on this site alone (of course it includes more than corals, but still). I wish I had that advantage. I am seriously considering making a big move next year (possibly to Florida). I will have to take the LFS into consideration.

Update.

Small plate coral that I picked up for $20.
More pics to come tonight with more colorful zoos. :)
Krista - yea, I guess it's a blessing having water surround you on every side and big ports for shipments lol. I have alot of people that go and catch their own little fish while snorkeling as well. (some kind of suction gun, very cool)
