Nassarius Snail

The guy from the pet store told me that this kind of snails will maintain adequate oxygen levels in the substrate it this true. I have a diamond goby he keeps my sand clean. Do I have to mix my sand up so the nitrates don't build up?

Do Not stir your sand. let the goby do it or get the nassarius snails. If you do it, it will cause a cycle for sure.

That's not entirely accurate.
Stirring a shallow sand bed should not be an issue. Stirring a deep sand bed can kill anaearobic bacteria throwing your water chemistry off.
Now, if you have a lot of detritus in your tank then stirring a deep sand bed could spike the ammonia as it overwhelms the bacteria, but I really don't consider that a cycle per say.
Nass. snails do in fact make great sand stirrers. The Goby however, not so much. The snails burrow in the sand and come out to feed (they like meat). The constant burrowing they do is a good way to keep sand stirred. plus they won't burrow deep enough to disrupt a deep sand bed.
Gobies, on the other hand, sift your sand. They eat the beneficial critters in your sand bed that can help keep your tank clean.

I definitely agree here. I have 10 nassarius snails in my 46 reef, and I just added another group of them into my soon to be seahorse tank. They pretty much stay under the surface of the sand until they sense food in the vicinity, come up to feed, then go back under to go about their business. In my experience, they've been very beneficial.

they will eat diteirous and algae in the tank and left over foods.
I have more than 100 in my 58 gallon.
they also reproduce in our tanks.

Ya, I probably have 150 in my tank.
They eat anything, but they seem to really like meaty foods. Regular feeding of your fish will feed them.

From what I've read if they don't attack other snails. How many turbos and astreas have you lost?

First of all welcome back. Haven't seen you for awhile. I have 10 super tongan nassarius snails, and have personally witnessed them devour 2 of my margarita snails. Margaritas cannot right themselves if they land on their shells, and the nassarius snails to full advantage of the situation. I got some of the footage on video.

They have killed about 10.. When the Turbos and Astrea are low on the glass they go up to them and pull them off or if they fall off the glass or rock. they all gang up on it and eat it...

The tongans is what I have. I have heard and read that the snails will send off an odor if they fall off and cannot right themselves. They are basically dying, if you don't flip them fast enough, its lunch time. I have witnessed them trying to knock a snail off the glass.
Herefshy, the way I have combatted this problem, is I feed my tongans pieces of shrimp. I am going to try to capture it completely on film next time, the best way to describe it is, like a pride of lions feasting on dead prey. Absolutely crazy and fascinating to watch.

Oh ya.. it's pretty wild. As soon as I drop some food in my tank the sand comes alive as they smell it and come out to eat...

I have about 30 in my 29g biocube and whenever I feed the fishes, they all pop out and it becomes a feeding frenzy, kinda fun to watch them come from seemingly nowhere
