Do you happen to know the species of crabs that you own? Green grass? Is it coral, is it algae?
Need more explanation. Possibly post some pictures?

The greeen grass has gorwn back in the nite light but it still seems odd to me . That the crabs would peel of the purple skin of the coral .

Sounds like your "green grass" is Green Star Polyps aka GSP and your "hairy green crab" is an Emerald Crab.
Its a good idea to know the names of what you have so that you can care for them properly and know their compatibility.
Anyways, when GSP gets irritated, it retracts. The crab climbing around on it would be enough to annoy it. Keep an eye on your crabs, some will rip at GSP and eat it.
