done...now there is enough water in the sump to keep it going BUT now when power is out too much water is drained
Can you post a pic of what you have now?
Did a little calculating, and assuming your breeder is 36" x 18"-40 gallon and your using a 20" x 10"-10 gallon sump. For every 1" in your main tank = 3.25" in your sump.

aight cool...i forgot to mention that i bought some thick acrylic and made a box to enclose the drain pipe with hopes that it will work...it is 14 inches tall and i plan to cut out a few notches...i tried to use some pvc/abs cement but it didnt take so i just siliconed the outside edge and inside corner and when i get ready to put it in the tank i will silicone the edges...that is the plan..now if it will work or not different story

IMHO, you don't need the overflow slots for a frag tank.
In the pic of the return with the pump off....that's how you want it with the pump on. That way the siphon will break as soon as the pump goes off. The durso will tell more as you run the pump.

Where it is is fine. It won't hurt anything. It doesn't help...but won't hurt either.

It might drain lower that the edge of the box. And that is good. These things allways take some tinkering. If you see I'm still actively posting, it's cool to call.

aight i am going to go silicone the box and i guess if i have to make adjustments i can do it to the pipe by making it shorter so that when the pump goes off the most it will drain is down to the wall of the box which is about 1-1.5 of the normal "ON" pump

i think i have figured out why the drain line cant keep up with my return pump...my main tank is set up for 600gph i believe and it has a 3/4" return line and at least 1 1/4" drain line....so i am going to run to lowes and get some maybe 1 3/4" or 2" pvc to use for the drain...is that going to help??
forgot to mention i am using a 1" return so i am getting a lot of gph back into the tank

Isn't a Mag5 only 500GPH?
