Ok, so I have the regular cheap light and crappy glass lids my perfecto 75 gallon came with. I have added 40 pounds of LS and goinng to get another 20 pounds today and 50 pounds of LR to add in it tonight. I have three damsels and one clown the tank is a week old ( i know the fish should be removed but thats not a option as where i bought them they have no return policy) I am curious what kind of lights should I go with and should I keep the glass lids ? do I need a powerhead ? whats a sump for andd is it needed ? I am running a skilter filter/skimer 400 and a 400 emperor bio wheel. I have a large heater which im goign to replace with two smaller ones as I read its better in case one breaks and to keep it more regulated. I need to know should I buy some invert now while its goign to cycle ? just to hel alittle or no and what should I also get tonight as I said im driving over a hour and a half to the store as its the closest one that has anything the other one is a dump. Quick responses would be great as im leavinng in a couple hours.
I thank you in advance

They're gonna cost a lot more than 150 bud.
Slow down in your pursuit of setting up this tank. If you rush you will bust.
how big of a tank are we talking here?

Wow! For starters answer some questions;
Reef or fish only with live rock? I'f your thinking reef, you're not planning on spending enough money, cause you'll spend close to that on the light alone.
I assume that tank is not a drilled tank?
Whats the waterflow (gph) on an emperor 400 biowheel?
Second; Dont buy anything living if your tank is only a week old (especially fish)! Its going to cycle and ammonia levels will most likely kill anything living you put in it at this point.
Pick up test kits for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates and a hydrometer or refractometer for testing salinity if you don't have them yet - don't buy dip strips! Get decent test kits.

I would not get any other livestock until after your cycle is complete. You will need to make sure you have test kits for Amm., nitrites, nitrates and phos. Make sure your using RO/DI water not tap. and get some of the live bacteria and something for the amm that will spike since you already Have. You need a water flow of 20xs your gallons so add all your flows and if you still need more add powerheads. 2-4 is better then one.

Ok I know that you are in a hurry but I would not buy any live stock now. Your lights are fine I would wait until you know what you want to keep in your tank before investing in new lighting you could end up wasting a lot of money in lights if you don’t plain ahead
. I would buy a 10 or 20 gallon cheap tank (the bigger the better) for your fish and use the water out of your current tank and some of your live rock to fill it and place your fish and while your 75 gallon is cycling (I still don’t think that this is a good idea but it might help). The 400 emperor bio wheel is fine, I am not sure what a skilter filter/skimmer is but you may want to look at buying a good protein skimmer. Good luck and again, please don’t buy any live stock at this time

ok...
Powerhead: yes. Lights: depends on what you want in the end. As for the glass lids, if you're going for a reef I'd personally ditch them (salt creep etc. blocks out the light, more pain than they're worth, IMO). FOWLR, keep 'em.
I wouldn't buy any more animals right now, just wait a bit. Patience is the key... I'm dealing with this right now with my daughter who REALLY wants a tang or puffer for her 10gal we set up a week ago. Needless to say, she has 1 Chromis...

I am reading it an the wife is just pulling in to leave. I will look again when I arrive at the LFS. The skilter 400 is a filter skimmer combo. The LR is only 2.50 a pound and they owe me LS. I amm only plannning on putting these in no fish atm. I amm goingn to be doinng Fish only for thhe time being. Its a 75 gallon. I can spend more I just seem to have blown 8k in the last two weeks on v-day and all kinds of other crap I didnt need.. Ps3 etc. anywayy back on track. Anyway the emperooor is a 400 and thhe skilter is a skimmmer filter mix. ( i really dunno how to set the skiller so i turn it half way seeems good to me anyway.
I am goign to buy a QT tank but thats inn two weeks and I have a tub i amm going to try and put the fish in if my wife says I can have something else cluttering up my living room. whichh I doubt she says yes too so it might just be pray for the best. My dogs would end up in it is the main reason just fyi the tub would not be a good idea.
Anyway thanks for the replies ill check in a couple hours when i get to the store.

Good luck man. Just keep checking your water. If you get some good live rock in there, you might skip the cycle phase altogether. Its happened to me before.

for a fish only tank, the lights you have are fine for now. Live rock does not need strong light.
powerheads, you need two or three depending on what the gph is on them. one on each end pointing in and one in the middle of the back. try for maxi jet 900 or 1200s
pick up sone test kits, and a bottle of something to detox the ammonia in your tank.
Take it slow.

Don't buy any fish at this time
! Its going to be weeks before you are able to add them safely to this tank, even if you set up a QT tank, that tank is also going to have to cycle. And a tub won't allow you to keep them for this long of time period without building up toxic ammonia from their waste!
Focus on what you need at this point for the cycle this trip - LR, LS, and test kits. The cycle will typically run about 30 days; sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the quality of LR and LS. And it will be another month or so before your tank begins to stabilize. Since you're planning FOWLR at this time, the lights and top should be fine for now. The skilter as a protein skimmer is IMO pretty poor, I personally would go with something else on this large of a system.
If you stick with just getting what you need, you should have plenty of money.

Ok, so at the LFS I bought some new filters etc to replace thhe ones that looked like milk had been poured all over them from removing the cc etc. I talked to thhe guy about power heads he suggested and I went with one KORALIA 4 flow rate 4600 L/H and 1200 GPH It is made by hydor or something. It really moves the water for sure. I am also cutting the lenngth of thhe skilters down tube so its not in the middle of my tank as im not trying to skim the middle its the top im after. I purchased some black diamond carbon and filled the little grey trays the emperor 400 came with and he said to change them weekly if not more for the first 30 days ther carbon that is to help it cyccle faster and better or something like that. I was also able to get FOOD !!! I was only able to feed frozen brine and now I bought a huge jar of omega one marine flake and oceann nutrition brine shrimp plus. I amm going to feed twice a day i think and mix them up. Thats it for now lemme know what you all think and thanks so mucch for the help guys your awsome. while at a few other fish stores I told them about you guys andd to drop the book on 101 tips when its free right here lol.

It was one that was better described on the thread 101 tips.. The one they had was like from 1954 had cob webs on it creakedd when tney opened it it was just not worth looking at. I think the pictures were actually etched in stone... Seriously I think before they get into it they should come here read things ( wish I woulda found it prior to buying stuff) and then buy some books that are recomended by the GEneral community here. you guys have been awsome. I was just telling my gaming buddies on teamspeak hoow great this community is and the response time is unreal.

P.S. what do you guys think of the koralia?? It was 64 bucks. The power heads were like 46 a piece or 36 and thhey did not put out the gph this does. I mean it got stuff up and movin where my skimmer can actually skim now well once I shorten the length. I saw in here the skilter 400 is poor whatt do you suggest ? I mean I like that it is also a filter or are they all filter skimmers ?

Cool, good to know. Just wanted to make sure no one was ripping off my idea (I wrote the 101 tip thread) or vice versa.
Glad to have you a part of the community!!

Which Koralia are you looking at (1, 2, 3, 4)? Though they are AWESOME pumps, you should not be paying $64 for any of them.

The Koralia 4 the sticker says 64.00 and thats what he got out of me... I mentioned above what all I bought and it came to 131.00 in total I think it was high so did my wife but then again its springfield missouri not like their is a lot to choose from.. The next closest one that would probably be better would be saint louis but thats 2 hours away or kansas city which is 4.. I kinda have to pay what they are asking.
Will it be better than 3 seperate power heads ? I mean it is a mean sucker I think I might be able to surf alittle from it...
