haha i had almost the same experience when i moved...
all the rock was out, everything was out, i was down to maybe 20 gals of water, and all of my sand....and him! i had to rake the sand veeerrrry slowly till i hit the very last corner and out he jumped! my heart skipped to beats and i knew he was gonna do that LOL! i saw exactly where he buried again, and then got him on the next attempt!
