no, it won't be the same. but Jerry Cantrell was and is AIC. Layne was the singer. Jerry wrote 95% of the music and about 80% of the lyrics and actually did more of the singing than most people actually realize. Jerry is the only ingredient that can't be replaced.
I imagine this album will have Jerry as the main singer and Duvall lower in the mix, kind of how the old AIC was Layne with the main vocals and Jerry lower in the mix.

I couldn't disagree more, no question Jerry is a great writer and irreplaceable as well, but Layne's unique voice made AIC what they were. It's like taking Eddy away from Pearl Jam, Stone and Jeff may write most of the stuff, but Eddie makes Pearl Jam.

Layne was one of two singers in AIC. he wrote no music and less than half of the lyrics. yes, I agree that he had a great voice. but there are so many vocal harmonies in AIC that you often times have to listen closely to tell who is even doing the singing. To give you guys ome insight. The new singer is awesome. I saw AIC when they toured (a year or two ago) with this new singer. He does the original songs spot on. His voice is a perfect match. Jerry writes most of the music so the new stuff will be very close to the same and the new singers voice has many ranges. They can sound like old AIC and his voice can sound different if he wants. But literally this guy has Layne's voice. I could close my eyes and not tell it was a different singer.

yeah, I saw them on that same tour. and I would venture to say that the AIC show was THE BEST show I've ever seen. and I've seen over 50 live shows, including Pearl Jam 3 times. and I'm telling you that Alice In Chains WITH A REPLACEMENT SINGER is a better live band than Pearl Jam which is world renowned as being a great live band. and Pearl Jam IS a great live band. I saw PJ once from the 5th row of an 11,000 seat ampitheater and they are AWESOME. but Jerry Cantrell and bassist Mike Inez had a stage presence that I've not seen in any other band.
I will say though, that I believed during the show just like on the new song that Duvall's vocals were lower in the mix than Cantrell's. I'm pretty sure this is by design. but it's a good move because Jerry really is a good singer. but yeah, if you closed your eyes, you wouldn't know it was a different singer.
Vocals are just like any other instrument......if your soundman EQs it right, you can make anybody sound like anybody else.

No you're right, it's not the same...Mother Love Bone (the original Pearl Jam) with Stone and Jeff and Andrew Wood singing was every bit as good as any album Pearl Jam ever has done (IMO), Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose and they added Eddie and changed the name to PJ.
Without Layne, the current AIC will never have an album as good as Dirt and Facelift. Guaranteed.
Layne Staley was what made Alice. Jerry Cantrell has been "good" without him.

I lived in Seattle from 1990-96, my brother played guitar in a lesser known band and he knew Jerry personally and met Layne. I have seen them several times (at least 5), they do not sound remotely the same to the trained ear. Honestly I don't think Layne was very good in concert most times I saw him (too stoned), but he sounds great in studio.

The new guy sounded spot on to Layne when I saw them perform. Have you seen the new singer perform, or are you making assumptions based off the new single playing which has inflections of the new singer's normal singing voice?
Izzy didn't leave because he hated axl....He left because guns and roses was getting to big. Axl turning into a jerk just helped him make his decision. They are friends at this point in time.
