The EO Smith School in Storrs CT has a marine biology class that deals with corals and such. They are doing a great job teaching the kids about the hobby, and help with aquaculturing and growing corals, fragging them, how to grow them, etc. Last year CTARS (CT Area Reef Society) sponsored a Frag Farmers event where people from all over New England and New York set up booths with their frags for a very large frag swap / sale. There is also a HUGE raffle for hobby related items.
This year, they are doing it again and hope to have it even bigger than last year. All proceeds from the booths and raffles go to the EO Smith School to help fund the marine biology department.
Hopefully people from all over will come down :)

Thanks for posting Renogaw! I'm going to try and go. There is never anything like that around here! Same question... Items for sale? Dont have to swap?? I mostly only have softies, not anything anyone else would prob. want! Dont think kenya tree frags are going to quite be the hot commodity!

It'll take me 120 miles to get there, but I'm in! I want to learn more

Do they also sell them? or do I have to bring something to trade?

Alright if this many people are going why dont we set a meeting spot? It will be hard to know who is who if we dont meet up before hand. there are a couple places like 5-10 mins from EO smith. I know my way around pretty well lol I am like right there. (Tolland) anyone want to try that? I will set us up a place where we can meet?

I'd like to meet up with the group just so long it isnt at the end of a deserted dark alleyway! I'll bring my mace! Better yet, a few frags of palys and can rub it in the eyes of the offender!!! Who Ha!!! Are you guys going to bring things to trade? I think I"m going to frag a few things. Mine are not exciting, but some sucker might be interested! I'm looking at buying a rock in the next week or so that is loaded with mushrooms and has 5 BTA on it. Its huge, I'll have to rearrange my entire tank AGAIN to get it in there. I think I'm going to have to sell some live rock. I'm at the point of having too much!

Ya you have no reason to worry about meeting up with me or anyone else. I am probably going to bring my girl, depending on if she has class or a test the next day or something. there are a few good places to meet like there is a CVS a little ways down (5 mins or so) that we can just meet there like 15 mins before and then head down to the school. My truck will be easy to spot :) I can make it even easier. I will also give out my cell phone number to any and everyone planning to meet up.

Jon from the coral project at E.O. Smith here.
Just jumping in to let people know what we are doing and what the Frag Farmer's Market is all about. I teach biology/environmental science/oceanography at the school and happen to also maintain about 1200 gallons of coral aquaculture setup in here at E.O. The idea behind the whole thing is involving kids in research to help us better understand coral aquaculture and encourage kids to think about things that they can do to help the planet in general (not to get all tree hugger on you but...). My big picture hope is that my kids can answer some of the questions that we all have about growing corals, ex. to feed or not to feed, etc...
As far as the Market goes, I am giving people who frag and grow their own stuff a chance to set-up a tank or two at the school (for a small donation to the school project!) and sell some of their home grown corals (and fish!) There should be quite a few tanks from people all over NE with frags for sale. I am sure that many of the people who set-up tanks would be into trading corals (I know I am!) My motivation for the whole thing being that we should all be trying to use as many aquacultured specimens as we can to limit collecting pressure on wild corla populations. Not to mention that you get a more durable coral for a cheaper price! It was pretty awesome last year and there were some great corals for great prices! Let me know if you are interested in setting up a tank or just have questions.

Thanks for the posting. I had bought some of their stuff in the past that they had in a LFS in Vernon and it worked out well. I'll mark down the date.

Wahoo, found out the expo I have to do for work is March 7, so I'm good for the 14th. Now I've got to work some Saturdays to get some spending money! Anyone who has been to this before know what average cost generally is for frags. Trying to figure out how much money I need to make before then. I'm not an SPS person, so would be looking for more softies, such as zoos, leathers, LPS. Cant wait!
