The hood was just a CSL 2x65 watt PC hood. The latest design they had before they went out of business. I took all the PC bulbs, wiring, and ballast out but kept the reflector and fan in it. I then just put in the VHO ballast and the endcaps and bulbs. It looks like a stock CSL hood, except its much improved.

Thanks, that sounds like something I can handle. My CSL hood is one that was put out right before they changed to Current USA and I think it is still in production under a new name. It's the one one the moon lites. I don't want to give up the moon lites so I assume I can leave them, the fan, and add a VHO actenic and VHO 10K with new ballast and endcaps.
Finally a semi-easy solution in this difficult world of SW.
Next question. What type of bulbs and ballasts should I get. Brand and wattage?
My hood is a 30" for my 20 gal. long. I assume the VHO bulbs are about 24"? How much is too much as far as wattage goes for a 20 long?

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Did you keep your moonlites in your hood when you made the upgrade?

Just thought of another question. Is there a MH bulb that would fit in that 30" CSL hood with the current PC actenic? Also, if yes, is the CSL hood high enough off the water for MH? I know they say 6" above water for MH. Maybe that's too much light though. Don't know if you can overdo it.

Yes you can get a MH in there. there is a nano specific site that you can go to for your answer. do a search for "nano-reef" on yahoo and you will find it, or you could just try typing that into your browser with www and see what happens. But I can't just come out and tell you because of rules. But do a search for MH and CSL hood and you willfind what you are looking for.
