I'm about to order about 100 lbs of live rock. I've heard how dangerous these Mantis can be, how would you put the new live rock into your tank without getting nailed by a mantis???

i've heard of dipping individual pieces of rock in fresh water, although i've actually never done it. they say it will draw any critter out of the rock. then i guess you pick the critters you want to keep and discard the ones you don't.
i wonder if you could let the rock dry out? i'm positive you'll kill anything that was alive on/in the rock, beneficial or not, but a thought....
i would wait for other opinions before going the way i've mentioned. like i said, i've never tried either of them.
good luck! :)

Where are you ordering it from? Between my 2 tanks I have a total of 230 lbs of rock from three diff sources. I have yet to have a MS. But I have been lucky I guess. I've read that if you dip your rock in a high salt mix 2.0 or above it will chase them out of the rock and you can get them w/tweasers.

DO NOT LET THE ROCK DRY OUT. What is the point of buying it if you're going to kill everything on it!

I'm getting it from Tampa bay Live Rock, I've heard alot of good things about them. I dont want to kill off any critters that may be vital at some point to the tank, but I dont want to pick up a peice of Live Rock and get nailed in the finger either. I was just wondering if there was an alternitive way, just to be safe.......
A lot of the testimonials at Tampa Bay Live Rock have said that they have found Mantis Shrimps in their orders.

I bought 60 ilbs from them and wish I would have bought all of my rock there. Get the "boat run" rock. YOU DO NOT WANT TO DIP THIS ROCK IN ANYTHING BUT YOUR TANK!!!! The stuff is beautiful, loaded with hard coral, polyps, tube worms seafans, starfish, red reef crabs, pods, you name it. I even found a decorator crab in it. Guess what? No mantis shrimp! I can't say enough good things about this place. Make sure you get overnight shipping. The send the rock COMPLETLEY submerged in water. Also make sure you check the shipping bags they come in over and over until you make sure you get all the little guys that come along for the ride.

Thanks for the input, I'm really looking forward to the order as well. I guess I'll just pick them up and put them in and pray I don't lose a finger................
kpogue, do you have any pics, what size tank do you have?

No, I don't....I need to get a real camera someday!
I have some of my 30 but they aren't digital.
I have a 30 and a 150. The 150 is only about 6 weeks old though.

I will add though, while "doing" my live rock, I was very watchful just in case there was something in there that might not like me.

It is beautiful rock. But, their website does indicate the high likelyhood of getting mantis shrimp. It's right there!!! If you're willing to roll the dice, good luck. The rock does appear to be the most beautiful I've seen.

I'm just going to lose a limb, I know I am! There has to be a way you can do this without loosing a index finger??????

I think folks get into that panic mode over this mantis shrimp thing. Like I said, I have over 230 pounds of rock from 3 different sources and have had none. I'd be more worried about the excessive heat and the shipping time than I would be about a shrimp!

If I remeber right I got 70 lbs of Boat Run rock, and 30 decorator rock. I have a good solid base already, I just need to add some color on top. Thanks again.....
