You will notice when testing that the ammonia will go up first. THen it may stay the same or go down slightly. When this happens, nitrites will be up. Then they will start to go down and ammonia will be down more or just about gone. Then nitrates will be up. As nitrates go down, ammonia will be at zero and then nitrites will go to zero and then nitrates also. You want it all at zero, and get a phosphate test too. That should stay below .5 ppm. You can get a phosphate reducing thing for your filter too. PH should be 8.2-8.4 ish but it should not fluctuate more than .1.
I recommend getting chaeto algae, that helps reduce nitrates. I keep mine in a clump towards the back of my tank. Do not overfeed your animals, this is important. They only will need to eat every other or every 3rd day if you have enough live rock. I recommend getting 12lbs at least. for the clean up crew i'd get 5 turbo snails, 7-8 nassarius snails, and 2 emrald crabs. Of course if you want you can throw in some blueleg hermits. I'd also order some copipods. Remember, nassarius snails eat waste. So if you get them a week before you get fish, you may want to put a small amount of food in the tank for them.

cheato and emerald crabs is a waste of $ on the cheato.. the emeralds will eat all of it within one day.. trust me it happened to me lol
you should add a pep shrimp to the tank too they are great at keeping aptasia(sp) under control
and my emeralds picked at my corals... just kinda knocked them off there rocks and stuff never actually eating them tho

I have heard they do knock things around a bit, but my tank was mature when i added them and they are great. Havnt hurt any of my corals. As for the chaeto, how could a little emrald crab eat a huge poof of chaeto algae silverdak?
Mines ginormous!

you would think they couldn't.. mine was a cup full... ugg its hard to say how big lol my LFS calls it a cup.. it was in the tank with the 2 emeralds for under 24 hours and 99% of it was gone! haha my emeralds were about quarter size in body so maybe they were just big eaters??

check out the viper clip on lights.. it may be much but then you are unlimited to what corals u want to keep. some have a fan installed in the bracket that holds it on..

okay cool whats the price gunna run on those?
lighting will probally be the most exppensize part of your tank.. anywhere from 150- 300..
u could get away with the one for 160.
if you go with MH you have pretty much no limit as far as corals go.. other than what you and your tank are ready for

with a ten gal. if the light is strong and close to the corals it shouldnt be a problem. the corals will only be a foot at the most away from the light... right? loll

yes, but you are looking for the correct lumens and PAR and not just watts.. or watts per gallon.. check you the stickey threads for info on these.
but yes PC lights will work if you are planning on keeping low light corals such as softies..

Here's what you need, I don't know what all you already have, but if you're on a serious budget... here's the budget baller build:
Used 10gallon.. $5, free from a friend, etc.
used 25w stealth heater, $5-$10 used
2 used koralia nanos, $10 each
10lbs liverock off craigslist, local club, etc. $20 if you look hard
livesand to cover the bottom out of a running tank. $10-$20 or free if you are slick
20inch powercompact fixture $20-30 if you're slick
Viper K2 MH 70w can be had for like $75used if you look hard enough.
Get an aquaclear HOB filter (probably already have one, just run a filterpad to catch debris, chemipure or other carbon, and a bag with rowaphos or other granular ferric oxide.) $20used.
If your goal is softies or some LPS, you can go skimmerless, but keep the fish load way down. Stay away from the xenia and gsp, they'll overrun a nano in a heartbeat since its hard to keep nutrients down as you can in a bigger tank.
You could have some cool euphyllias (i.e. frogspawn), zoas, ricordeas, mushrooms, a leather, and maybe a brain coral.
