The Saints Are Now America's Team
By DAVE ANDERSON
Published: September 15, 2005
AS the Saints, running hand in hand, were loudly cheered during the introductions last Sunday at their season opener in Charlotte, N.C., one fan held up a sign: "New Orleans, We Love You - 363 Days a Year."
The other two days, of course, are when the Carolina Panthers play the Saints, a division rival, an understandable hometown reaction. But when the Saints, suddenly a traveling team uprooted from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, won last Sunday, 23-20, on John Carney's 47-yard field goal with three seconds remaining, even the Carolina fans had to smile. So did every pro football fan.
Whether the Dallas Cowboys like it or not, the Saints are now America's Team, at least until they can go home again.

Sweet Play of the Week: At 1:20 p.m. ET on opening day, the Saints scored a touchdown beginning the New Orleans comeback -- of the city, not the team. TMQ predicts New Orleans will stage the fastest comeback in history. At 4:17 p.m. ET, the Saints kicked the winning field goal, and all America was rooting for them. Now think ahead to next week, when Monday Night Football airs an unusual doubleheader caused by the Saints' jury-rigged schedule. At 7:30 p.m. ET, the Saints and Giants kick off on ABC; at 9 that game switches to ESPN, while the regularly scheduled Washington-Dallas contest airs on ABC. Let me repeat my prediction of a week ago: Unless the Saints-Giants pairing is a total blowout, all of America will switch over to continue watching New Orleans. Redskins-Cowboys will be the lowest-rated Monday Night Football game ever, though for a good reason.

The New Orleans Saints sure look like America's Team. They're on the cover of national magazines, the subject of national news programs and all of a sudden find themselves with legions of fans who don't spell the family dog's name Phydeaux.
What they feel like is America's Orphans.
If it's not enough of a handicap moving their entire operation to San Antonio, where they'll play three games, and playing four more in Baton Rouge, the Saints will play their home opener Monday night against the Giants at ... Giants Stadium.
The end zones will be painted black and gold with "Saints" and fleur-de-lis, and New Orleanians Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. and Irvin Mayfield will perform the national anthem and America the Beautiful. The Saints will even get the usual 60 percent take of the home gate.
But who dat say it's a home game?
The Saints have shrugged their shoulders all week, but when NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the decision two weeks ago, Coach Jim Haslett said it "put us behind the 8-ball."
The Saints made their feelings known when Tagliabue asked to address the Saints before their 23-20 win at Carolina last Sunday. They said no, choosing instead to have an emotional letter by New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin read to them.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The devastation visited on the Gulf Coast and the city of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath has both relegated football to secondary status and thrust the New Orleans Saints into a role as America's Team.
The team has embraced its role as a symbol of perseverance and hope

Emotion in motion
Inspired Saints win late to raise Gulf Coast spirits a bit

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With all due respect to Dallas or to New England, or whichever outfit is, was, or will be America's Team, right now that moniker belongs to the New Orleans Saints.
DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

New Orleans (plus 3) at New York
The Saints are supposed to be the home team but will be at Giants Stadium instead because of the hurricane Katrina carnage in New Orleans. So the Giants are favoured by three points, probably a six-point swing if the Saints were truly at home. The question is whether New Orleans can carry the emotion that helped them win in Week 1 at Carolina for another week. Go with emotion. The Saints are now America's team.
Saints, 24-23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- To the New Orleans Saints, Monday night's bizarre "home" opener was unfair from the outset. And they played like they didn't want to be there in losing 27-10 to the New York Giants.
so much for being america's team
as i said earlier, they got their emotional victory. the rest of the season is down hill. watch how fast the "america's team" crap is forgotten

If parcells didnt get rid of quincy we wouldnt have sucked last year..
he had some talent
but nooooo parcells likes to bring in old pats and old jets, and i emfasize(sp) the OLD
What team is Quincy Carter starting for this year?
Oh yeah, he isn't. Parcells knew something there. I mean if Carter can't even get a job with any other team in the NFL, that says something.
Regardless, both of "America's" teams lost on the same day. How depressing.
Add in the fact that Minnesota got kicked bad, I had a terrible football weekend.

No doubt the situation they face manifested itself on the field last night. 6 turnovers and numerous penalties can be corrected. No concentration and a lack of focus, They still have the talent to be in the playofff hunt but 13 road games makes it difficult.
It was the home opener for Dallas and with the induction of the triplets to the ring of fame you would have thought they would have had the emotional edge.
Emotion is big part of football. I actually thought Dallas choked last night. Bledsoe shows his age. No excuse for givieng up that second tuchdown the way they did..but stuff happens.
As for Minnesota they got rid of that jerk Randy Moss...and their offense shows it. All I kept hearing is they would be better offensively without him. I guess Tice thought if he kept saying it everyone would beleive it. Only 2 games but he could be the first head coach to go this season . A loss to New Olreans could sink his baot.
Dom Capers in Houston could beat him to the punch. have either received the kiss of death vote of confidence from their owners and/or gm's?
I stated the Saints Americ's team tag would be short-lived.
I know Dallas has that name, but if on field performance is the true test then they no longer deserve the name either.
This weekend proved one thing....hard to figure the NFL..especially the teams grouped in the 8-8 category.
nest week in another week. I am actually not that concerned regarding the Saints . I will be if they lose next Sunday to Minnesota.
Too early to tell but I think you can see the cream in both conferences..the teams that will be battling in the 8-8 range...and the awful "dogs".

With The Randy Moss trade it got missed by a good majority of people that Minnesota also lost their Offensive Coordinator. They couldn't find a "name recognized" replacement and went with someone unproven. This I believe is the biggest factor for their offense faltering.......this and Daunte's turnover ratio. Even with Moss the Viking would be hard pressed to beat a High school team with Daunte turning over the ball like he is. Christ he has almost matched his last season total for turnovers and it is only week two.

IMO..you can't replace Moss with Burleson and be better off. It defies football logic. Although a jerk, one could certainly make a case that he is the best or one of the best today. He already has made a big play in each of the first two games for Oakland. He is or can be a difference maker and dictates a certai deffensive scheme to an opponent.
I have not looked at a Vikings game, but receivers making incorrect reads or runing bad routes can sometimes cause interceptions. They'll play the Saints on Sunday. Going back to preseason...this will be I beleive the 5th straight road game for the Saints and one less day to prepare.
The offensive coordinator was selected by Tice...so he has to live with it.
Although they made several changes in personnel on defense...it did not show in the first two games..
All in all it appears to be a total team melt down. Typical of when a coach is at the end of his road with a particiular team/organization.
