when i got my mcCaw he was a baby.i had to hand feed him.get the tap water as hot as it will get ,mix the formula and literally ram it down his throat. he would shake like crazy.i fed untill his front pouch was full and firm. at first when they showed me how to do it i felt like it was mean but thats how they eat. mine was named tri pod because his mothe i guess bit off one of his toes. i could pick him up and wrestle with him.when i yelled at him he knew what was up.he would put his head down.then i felt sorry for him and had to play.wish you didnt post this stuff cause now i miss him
Sorry but your talking parrots and I can't resist.
I had my breeder feed my baby because I was too afraid to. The reason being...I had read to not get the food too hot, or too cold..either one would kill him, and if the bird wasn't full enough he would die of starvation, and if it was too full he would die too. The lady I purchased the egg from would guarantee me a healthy bird only if she fed it until it was weened. For $1500.00 I wanted a guarantee. So I didn't take custody until Jellybean was 3 months old....LOL, I made sure I got a male because I feared it getting egg bound, and I didn't want to breed parrots.
So you were much braver than I was...maybe macaws are different than amazon babies. They always looked like too much bird for me to try and be comfortable with, the amazons are large enough. No matter how much you love the bird and it loves you...eventually you get bitten. Jellybean bites me when a stranger is around and he thinks he can chase me to a safe place with a bite (so the books claim)....LOL, Jelly is fortunate I liked him after that bite, it was painful...I can't imagine a macaw bite.
