It depends on what skimmer you have now and whether or not it is doing it's job. I think an MP40 is a bit much for a 30 gallon mixed reef. You would have to have it dialed way back. What kind of flow do you have in there now?

Don't they make mp10s?
Why not both lol....I'm more old school powerhead and return guy.

Honestly, it depends on the needs of your system. If you struggle with water quality, a skimmer. Water flow issues, then an mp 10 (mp 40 is overkill). You need to ask yourself what are your goals with the upgrades.

Personally I'd either use the reef Octopus or the ASM. Deltec in sump skimmers are costly and can't justify cost. If you were looking for a HOB then the Deltec, but in sump it would come down to cost between the Reef Octopus, ASM mini -G, or even a Euro Reef skimmer would rock the boat. If you look enough you'll find the Euro Reef skimmers at a decent price.

So if money wasnt the issue which one? I thought the asm 2 and the 150 ( I think it was) for the octopus

ASM G2 is way overkill for a 30 gallon......Size the skimmer accordingly.....Just because you oversize doesn't mean you'll gain any performance....In all actuality; you'll probably loose because it's way oversized and won't skim efficiently or consistently.....A little big isn't a bad thing, but way to big....
If I were searching I'd probably opt either the Reef Octopus or an alternative would be a SWC
Reef Octopus 4" Recirc skimmer.....

ASM Mini G.....Not a fancy looking skimmer but does perform.....rated to 75 gallons...

Euro Reefs aren't made anymore, but look for 1 used at a fair price would be an excellent choice as well......

i love the ASM's i had that when i had my 180 reef... you think if i went with an ASM 1 it would still be overkill? Or more importantly would'nt perform as well as the mini?

G1 would work, skimming consistency could be an issue. Meaning it might skim at times then not.......But will work.

Looking at the reef octopus above I noticed that it needs an additional pump or connected directly to the overflow drain. Is this true do you have to plumb it or can you plug and play?

The Octopus skimmer........Sorry I posted the recirc skimmer......You don't truly need a recirc unless you like the redundancy of a recirc. The standard skimmer model is your basic skimmer which includes the feed pump for the skimmer.....A recirc skimmer does need an additional feed pump....The pump shown circulates the water through the skimmer.....
As far as feeding the skimmer from the overflow.....Honestly comes down to a personal choice, but I've done it in the past and wasn't thrilled with the results.....I spent some time during my skimmer selection asking that question, and was advised that yes gravity feeding does save on electrical costs, but will cost you efficiency for the simple fact the overflow presents other issues that will affect the efficiency of the skimmer.....Bubbles being the major culprit.....Bubble from your overflow will be introduced into the skimmer affecting the efficiency. How it does this is the bubbles would disrupt your foam head due to the skimmer wanting to "burp" which in turn your foam head won't be as consistent. This is something I've noticed running my MRC recirc skimmer in the past......

im going to go with BOTH. hte ASM mini and teh MP10 wireless (cause i don't think one will be enough)
placement will be tough for the PH without blasting the corals...

I hope the mini does a better job than what I have now. I'm nervous but super pumped both will be here tomorrow

i have both the ASM mini g and the new mp 10 installed. I have to say that the MP10 is making a little too much noise for my liking. also, its not enough flow for what im trying accomplish all on its own. i will need to get another one eventually. .
as far as the skimmer goes, still breaking in but seems like it produces a lot more bubbles then teh eshopps. i have it in about 8" of water and the bar is raised to just below the bottom of the collection cup. i will try to get some pics later on tomorrow.
