New Spotted Eel

I tore down my reef tank and made an eel only tank after reading about how I can't keep the more fun, aggressive eels with fish. It was completely worth it. I bought 2 spotted eels from my LFS. Eels have become my favorite type of fish in only a few days. I have had a zebra eel for a year or so and thought I knew about eels... Yea right! There is no comparing a passive crustacean eater to mean fish eaters. They swim around the tank all day long, wrapping around the rockwork and constantly investigating with their mouths gaping open. The most enjoyable part is feeding time. They tear in to fish and shrimp with a vengence. Just to test a theory about keeping them with fish I went out and bought a 5" freshwater fish (I know you can't feed them freshwater regularly, this was just to test). They put this fish down in no time, together. It's amazing how much they can eat. Maybe I'm ranting a little, but these eels are beautiful.
WARNING!!!
Lots of pics.

I will be upgrading soon since I know these eels can't live forever in this tank. They are in there with my Zebra eel. The lighter of the 2 spotted eels has taken to hanging out with the zebra. The are inseperable at any other time than feeding time.

OK, so they where spotted morays for I figured as so but couldn't positively make 100% identification.
Now I a question for you, I know after I tell you of the hookjaw if Jeff could get it and when and price, that you be setting up a new tank for it. But? You cannot keep the SFE in with the spotted eels and depending what other fish you think of mixing in, and hopefully they are large species, too large that they couldn't fit into the eels jaws and if it may be that your idea is the spotted eels only tank (species only tank) Your will need not smaller then a 150 long. And much larger if you want fish (nice large size fish that is) in which we be talking 240 gals or more.

Hey DME. There is a zebra eel in there with them. He's about 4' so there is no worry about them eating him. I don't want any fish, just eels in there. They'll be going in a 200 soon. So it will be the 2 spotted, zebra and hookjaw in the tank and nothing else. If your friend Jeff can get me a hookjaw. Also, the zebra is boring me pretty bad now, so I might be getting rid of him.
Connor, I'd say a single spotted would need a 125+ when it's an adult. These are just a little over 1' each. They will get to up to 4'.
Jr, I stated already I'm upgrading. I'm sure you just didn't read that though.

I wouldn't house a SFE, chainlink or Zebra with those eels for even that the eel is large, it not mean the spotted wouldn't become aggressive towards it for those eels would be at the mercy of the spotted eels.

The zebra is in the tank with the spotted eels already and they are all getting along fine. No aggression at all. One of the eels rests in the same cave as the zebra. So don't shoot yourself.

boalgf, this is a unpredicible hobby in keeping any mix of marine species for what you see now that all are family, in time to come can change for the worst.
Let me offer you some low down............
The hookjaw grows less then 28" and the spotted at a max of 4' which is 48" and or aggressive to anything it can prey on and eels such as the other three I mentioned, I not would keep in even a 240 gal tank, these animals have no place to escape their aggressor.

Mis- typed again, I was saying it grows less then 30" but typed in its max size instead

I'm a little lost here. Are you saying the hookjaw eel is going to get eaten by the spotted? Or are you saying the zebra will get eaten by the spotted? You can't really think they will eat the zebra when the zebra grows larger than they do. Also, the hookjaw gets to 36" not 30", which is just one foot less than the spotted. It's also supposed to be much more aggressive. I think it will work fine. The spotted moray is very aggressive to fish it can eat, but is getting along swimmingly =) with the other eels. Thanks for the input here, but I don't think you or I have anything to worry about.

Comparability with one another that one could or will refuse the other in this tank, it has happen before and even if the spotted eel not eat the hookjaw, they can aggressively make it know that they not wish for the hooklaw to be near their lair and as for the zebra, it to faces the same risk that the spotted eels might cause the zebra some serious injuries and that the larger the spotted eels grow, the higher the risk becomes.
Thanks for the input here, but I don't think you or I have anything to worry about.
I cannot stop you in anything you want to do, for all I can do is offer to you my assistance in what it is you like to do and thanks boalgf for not saying I you think my word is law or that you better only do things my ways for in one other site, this is most of what I heard and I became sick of it after a while for I told them that I am only giving those people my opinion in their questions. Well, I am out of there now and sorry i said that I not wish to side track your thread.
Also think of it this way, Ask me if I would do what your thinking right this moment.

Also, the hookjaw gets to 36" not 30
I said it grows a max of 28" if your tanks water and food meets to its best interest.

No worries DME. I like the input. They seem to be doing well so far. If there is any aggression I have a 125 I can put the Zebra eel in. So far it looks great though.
Everywhere I read says the reticulate hookjaw grows to 36" (90cm).
I hope this won't stop you from asking your friend Jeff about the eel for me. I care about my fish greatly. If, after watching the spotted eels, I feel it would be unsafe to put another eel with them in a 200 gallon, then I will leave them in there alone.
I hope everyone is enjoying the pictures.

Be nice if you can show me this site and remember that I said that information is conflicting at various sites
