New to Saltwater, few questions

I would not worry too much about your nitrates since this is a new set-up...I also can't find where (or if) you said how long it has been running
Water changes will help with the nitrates though...along with other maintenance
White vinegar works wonders on cleaning salt....

oh, sorry about that. Well the guy i bought everything from told me to take like 60% of his water, so we took them in like garbage bins. We had it setup since Sunday night, so i guess only 2 and a bit days. maybe im worried over nothing
If i use vinegar though is it safe to put the skimmer back in the tank. I haven't even put it in yet. Its the Tunze 9010.

Im not too sure how good this performs, but i guess for a while its going to be what i'll be using unless its absolutley horrible, not too sure how to even install it to be honest.
Thanks

I would do some large water changes to get the nitrates down.
I wouldn't put a damsel in there unless you really like damsels. Not so much because it would be mean to this fish, but because damsels have a reputation for being mean. If your Ammonia and Nitrites are 0 then you should be able to add a fish. I'd still do a large (maybe 50%) water change first.
Clown's make good first additions in my opinion. They are about as hearty as damsels, but not as mean. Except for maybe tomato clowns which I've heard can be pretty nasty too.

Thanks a lot, Ill do that change later tonight or tomorrow night.
I was thinking about adding 2 clowns to start :). The one pet store i use, takes a water sample from us first then sells us fish. So that'll be safe for the fish anyway.
Oh kk, ill try to wipe it down with vinegar too. um should i dilute it first? Thanks
Also, i was thinking about setting up a quarantine tank, any suggestions on this and what i will need? i have a very small 15 gallon tank i can use, if thats possible

And just to add to what meowzer said..... Welcome to the forums!! There's a lot of goofy people (stop LOOKIN at me, Joe!!) but it's a blast.
And you're probably already on top of this, but if not, go get a wet chemical test kit as soon as you can. The wet sets are much more accurate than those strips. And if you're ever tempted to put a damnsel (yes I misspell them on purpose) in your tank...just PM Meowzer and ask her how much FUN she had with her damsels.

Thanks for the welcome :)
im still trying to get my nitrate levels down, i dont understand why its so high, ive tried water changing. I do want to get the wet kits though, maybe its just the strips, but i doubt that, i mean i guess it could be the strips but i dont know :(
I guess ill do another water change and wait a few days

Welcome Insomnia! Word of advice from a newbie. Take everything with a grain of salt. There are many paths to take in this hobby but they might not all be the right ones for your situation. Everybody has something that works for them that others say is no good. Plus its entertaing to watch the shananagans from the natives when you talk about things like damsels and ask how to tell if your water is cycled. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome :)
And my nitrate seem to have went down, i guess that last water change worked out :). Got a Damsel to start. Going to get 2 clowns next and maybe a few Tangs later on. Yay :)
Thanks for all the help
(and i picked up some wet test kits)

It's a 90G right.....If anything you could do a yellow tang....I wouldn;t get any more than one...
There is another tang that is ok for a tank under 100G's....I just can't think of the name off haned

Yea i thought it was a 90g, sorry i never fixed that, its a 110g, but thats like barely over 100 lol. we were hoping to get the Blue Hippo Tang, a Yellow Tang, aw we were going to get a Naso aswell, but i just checked and there's a 125g minimum.
Also, is there anyway i can reduce the noise from the filters, powerheads, skimmers etc? just tank noise in general.
Any other fish you would recommend? (So far i have a damsel, and id like to get 2 Clowns, and the 2 tangs i named above)

What kind of damsel did you get? I would seriously think about getting it out now..they are some vicious creatures

Jaus a FWIW, to me the single most over arching concept especially with saltwater tanks, is to first get the plant life (macro algaes or the various algaes (hopefully corraline) on the live rocks) thriving then do all the rest.
For instance, your nitrates are 40ppm or so. With macro algaes they eventually will be 0 regardless of the water changes or anything else that is being done. But during the initial cycle the macros will consume ammonia directly which can prevent the ammonia and nitrIte spikes. But sometimes that does result in an initial nitrate spike as the plant life prefers to consume ammonia over nitrates. Then as the aerobic bacteria expand and consume the ammonia, the plant life starts consuming the nitrates because that is the only nitrogen available. So the only spike you get is an initial nitrate spike that drops down in a few weeks.
