New to the reef game!

The problem lies in the fact I have $300 bucks invested in that skimmer and it is brand new. I broke down all the boxes for it as well. Not sure what I should do? Definatly dont want it to sit on the shelf and I am pretty sure I cant return it.

If you have a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated. I only know the coralife brand and if I am doing harm to the tank I would want to stop that as soon as possible. I really appreciate the advice as well. I saw your shallow tank thread...what an amaising tank and set up.

It is not doing a harm. I would go ahead and run it and start saving for a better one in the future. It won't be much of a problem until you start increasing your bio load.

I have decided that I am going to build an external refugium for our new tank. We have tonnes of spare aquarium parts as well as 2x75G tanks and a 30G tank. I had the bottom drilled for an overflow in the 30G tank and am going to build a stand and plumb it to the sump on the 180G system.
I was considering putting it right into the sump but I after reading all the great creatures you can keep in them I decided to use the 30G tank and make it a display as well.
I dont know if anyone is interested but i will put up some pics to show my progress.

You dont think the coralife 220 is good enough? Just curious cause it was recommended by local fish retailer. ( granted I only know a little he seems to have his s#&t together) It was real expensive too!
Honestly that skimmer really won't last if you want a nicely stocked tank...Although a refuge will really help. For that size tank you should be expecting to drop 450-600 on a nice skimmer.

Well if I have to buy a new skimmer
, I would love to hear some recomendations as to what I should get
. The tank is 180G, with an allglass #4sump ( not to sure on how many gallons it is, I am guessing somewhere between 20 and 30 G ) and I am adding the 30G refugarium. So should be somewhere around 240 total gallons.
I would love to hear from others who have similar setups and what they have found works the best. Thanks, Rhett

Tanks for the advice I appreciate it greatly
, I really thought my cl220 was gonna work good but it really isnt skimming as much as I thought it would
. I will have to buy a new one. Should I get it rated for a larger tank than what I have? Thats why I went with the 220.
I am also getting alot of particles floating in the water; the water is not cloudy but I think the fish are stirring things up. I have two layers of filter pad and a thick layer of fine wooly/cottony stuff in my sump a wel as a layed of carbon. My lfs recommended the wooly stuff but the prticles are really bothering me.

I would get a skimmer rated for atleast double your water volume. Almost all brands over rate their skimmer IMO.

Hey, I appreciate all the advice it means alot to me being quite new to reefing.!

I have decided to go with a Bubble King mini 200 insump protein skimmer. The reason is I dont have alot of room for a big skimmer and I have heard from numerous sources these are the best and should be able to hold my bioload no problem.
I have also solved my over heating issue with a Tunze At5000 1/3 HP chiller and Danner Supreme Mag drive 7 pump.
While we were on a spending frenzy today we decided to get ph, salinity, calcium and nitrate probes for easier more accurate testing.
I also finished my display refuge which I thought turned out quite nice. I am looking forward to getting some algae and inverts in there. Here is a pick.
Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Life is a game and school is a game but reefing, my friend, is serious business

And it looks like you're either a natural or a researchaholic. You've done very well!

Thanks and thats some funny s@#t! Yeah we have a bit of a background in fish only tanks. I have been reading these forums like crazy! I am sooooooooooo addicted now! Its crazy i am gonna be at 12 step meetings soon.! I really am enjoying it and we got our first ever corals yesterday and was so excited I forgot to ask what kind they were !lol.
They look great in the tank and I will get some pics as soon as my tank settles down ...I did a bit of a cleaning.

after a little practice you'll see that reef keeping really isn't that hard at all. its just hard on your bank account.
