Hey welcome to the fourm! What kind of tank do you want to do? A reef tank, fish only? Once you figure that out you need to know what kind of things (fish or reef) you want in it. The tank size should depend on what you want to house. I've read a lot on here and they say as big as you can fit and afford. Bigger tanks give you more room for error. But if your looking for a smaller setup, they have these great starter tanks called bio-cubes, you should google it! I have friends that have these and they look pretty cool.

You definitely want to get as large a tank as you can afford and have the room for to start off with. Larger tanks are easier to care for since with more water volume you've got a larger margin for error. Your best bet would be to figure out exactly what you'd like to keep in the tank and go from there.

Welcome to the site
I would say go as big as you can. Cause once you get into this hobby you will have upgrade syndrome is what I like to call it. I started with a 55 gallon tank and I had 5 fish in there and it was pretty much maxed out as far as fish go. I didn't even have it a year before I decided I NEEDED more fish, lol! So I went ahead and bought a 200 gallon so I can keep just about anything now...not anything...but a lot more than 5 fish. So I wish I would have just gotten the 200 to begin with...but I'm glad I got some experience in with a smaller tank as well. Let us know what you decide to go with:)

Just because you are a newbie, doesn't mean that you can't get a small tank and have it flourish.
However, I do agree that you should get the largest tank that you think you can afford. Unless you want a small tank. If you want a small tank, go for it. Whatever you do, make sure you research it properly and you'll be fine.
Welcome to the boards. Sorry that our finer members (gross old men

*Rubik's
I never hit on Meowzer at all, but you may have misconstrued it that way. Find a thread where I used sexual innuendos or commented on her physical appearance. It can't be done my friend. But as to not ruin this nice lady's first thread, I think we should stop this.
Just pallin' around. I never liked that expression.

Seriously though people are keeping 3 gallon Picotope tanks and doing it very successfully. However do we recommend it for a person just getting into saltwater tanks...............no. Best thing to start with is to get yourself a good book on reef tanks I suggest
The Nano reef handbook by Chris Brightwell. It will give you some good starting points on the keeping of smaller tanks.

Yes a 3 gallon pico is pushing it. It doesn't matter how much research you do, a beautiful tank that small is going to require at least a little experience.
I've never been able to find the Nano reef handbook, but I've heard it was good.
There is so much knowledge to be gained on a forum, but most of that knowledge is useless without a good foundation. Weeding through millions of posts to build your foundation is difficult. That is why it is advantageous to ask questions like this and also the reason why books are awesome.

LOL...Don't start with a 225G.....I have a 225G (was my 1st), 54G, and 29G....to tell you the truth, the 54G is the easiest of the 3 right now
Except for the fact that I can reach everything in the 29G w/o needing my husbands help....I kinda like that about the 29 HAHA

I want a 225 so I can go scuba diving!
I would suggest a 10-14 or a 24-29. I got a 14 and I wish WISH I got a 29 instead:( So, I would suggest a 29. Sure you will spend a couple extra hundred to setup but it will be worth it. I am saving up to get a Red Sea Max 130(34 gallon) hopefully by next summer. Then I will rig up my 14 to be a refugium:D

What the heck is gogism? Do you mean yogism as in philosophy?
I'm still trying to get over the fact that you actually are capable of using a computer at all.

I think Joe may find the answer a bit ambigous. Couldn't the largest tank the OP can afford be a small tank?

It could. To say that she can only afford a 10 gallon tank would be okay, it would just require more maintenance and research.
