I would read Lion_Crazz's thread that TeresaQ linked for you. Lion is trusted on this site and his thread is more recent. I didn't read the thread you linked, but the info you quoted goes against everything I've ever heard.

Sorry, I just wanted to add that as you are beginning this hobby, be careful about getting advice. That includes LFS and message boards like this one. Alot of people are going to give you conflicting advice. I make it a rule to get opinions from multiple people. Unfortunately, many people will disagree on how to do things and ALOT of people will give you outdated advice. You have to sort through it for yourself and decide what makes the most sense for you. However, The mods here are very knowledgeable (spelling?) and can be trusted.

I agree, there is more then one way to get where you want. no one way is absolute. Gather info and make your own conclusions.

If your tank is a corner tank (quarter of a circle) that is 29" tall and 36" deep it is around 129 gallons.

This is why I am so confused...althogh my tank has been up for onl;y 2 weeks I have been researching everyday for months. I have been to several aquariums throughout 2 states......EVERYONE tells me something differt. For example I was a a store last week and the guy told me to add 3 damsel after 2 weeks of the cyling well i am at 2 weeks today.....I think my levels are to high but he said that is why to use damsels they are hardy.......ughhhh

using fish to cycle is old school. People now use live rock or a dead store bought shrimp to intoduce ammonia. If you already have ammonia reading, then you are already into your cycle. Now its just a waiting game for it to drop to zero. The more bacteria building in your tank, the more it will eat the ammonia. Thats why live rock is important. It is a surface area for bacteria to colonize. The more bacteria, the less ammonia.

Thank you....now that is in english.!!! One more question I have heard some say yes some say no---during the cyling process do u do water changes?

unless your ammonia gets above one or two, dont do one until it reaches zero.
Then do a 10 percent change and add a few snails and crabs.

+1 on this....If you cycle your tank and then add more live rock you could end up restarting the cycle which would cause your tank to crash. It would depend on how much LR you added at a time. It is expensive, but worth the intitial expense to do it right in the beginning.

Will base rock mess up my levels? I was thinking about adding 50 lbs. of base rock that i found on ---- for $80.

no just be sure to wash it really good. Maybe even run it in a tub of saltwater for a week or so with a powerhead.
I baught some Key largo rock last yr, it was nice, but dirty. It had lots of wholes. it was like 2.44 a lb

Sorry...another question.....What is better for testing, liquid or sticks? right now I am using liquid which i am not sure about for example when i was taking the amonia test yesterday it started out saying my level was at 0ppm and by the time the 20 minutes (which is when it says read it) was up it didn't really match any of the colors and I was quessing it to be 1.0

Liquid. Just follow the directions, and if you arent sure, have your lfs double check.
I saw the base rock you were talking about, thats really nice.
I think thats a good deal.

do you have any fish food. I would put a pinch in, wait a few days and test again.
Do you have anything for a cleanup crew to eat. Have you started to get brown algea on the sand yet. You dont want to rush it.

Hang in there, the first year is full of frustrations and confusions, it gets easier.
I'm a little behind on this thread now, but I wanted to reply to this and tell you that if I were you, I wouldn't add damsels AT ALL. They are very aggressive, nasty little fish and will narrow your stock list options. They are also extremely hard to catch. If you do a search on damsels you will see several threads about how people want them out of their tanks. While you are waiting for your levels to come down, start making a plan for a stock list. It is easier to figure out from the beginning what kind of fish you want. That way you can plan for compatability. It is harder than you would think.

tested my tank this morning and amonia and nitrites are both at 0 and ph is still at 8.3. I don't have a nitrate test yet I will be getting that this weekend.
Is it normal for the nitrite level to drop from .3 to 0 in one day?
Also I just looked at the paper that I was righting things down on in the begining and it has been 3weeks not 2
