It doesnt matter if they joined up for college or not, the reserves or active duty. You're joining the MILITARY. For those people that say "I just joined for college, but now I wish I hadnt, cause I'm in a war" shouldve thought more about that before they signed on the dotted line.
well my husband joined to fight, somebody has to do it. It wasnt for the money, or anything else of that nature, Just the simple fact he wanted to be a Marine. We sure as hell wouldnt get anywhere if u ran the military would we, i find it rather interesting how u were once military and now u rag on it, r u any relation to john kerry???

I think you completely misunderstood what I was saying.
I didnt join the military for money or for any other reason other than the fact that I wanted to defend this country. I'd wanted to join the Navy since I was a child.
I have, in NO way, ragged on the military and honestly...I'd rather piss on someone than look at them for ragging on MY military...especially John Kerry.
I commend your husband and if I could, I'd shake his hand, hug him and then buy him all the beer he could drink. I have many, many friends that are prior active duty and even more friends that are STILL active duty, that I keep in regular contact with, that are in the Middle East.
I joined the military with the full plan of going full career, doing my 20 years and more, if they'd let me. The only reason I left the Navy was because I was involved in a helicopter crash, in the Middle East, in 2002.
What I meant, in my post, was that I'm getting tired of people saying "Hey, I only signed up for college money". In the end, it all boils down to you voluntarily signed up for a military branch. There's a posibility of going to war. You should fully know this when you sign up and dont whine about it when you have to do defend this country.

My 23 year old son just finished basic for the Army reserve and is in training now in training for his MOS. When he was talking about joining I didn't try to talk him out of it but I did make sure he understood that he was more than likely going to end up in or around Iraq. I figured he was going in for $$$ and education. Turns out he didn't score well enough on the testing to get the $$$ but he was determined to join anyway. My wife recently got a look at papers he filed out when during the early stage of his recruitment. The only reason he listed for joining was "to serve my country". Damn, my goofy kid went and growed up when I wasn't looking.

I have passed this thread many times just because of the Narrow mindedness (don't even know if that's used right).
I am a 20+ year Retired Marine war veteran and now am a Mayor for a small town. I tell you all this because I am a VERY PROUD AMERICAN. Bush bashing in my mind is like Christ bashing.
Look at what Bush was left with (Thanks to Mr. Clinton). I feel he is doing the best he can with what he was left with. He and He alone did not choose to "go to war"; he followed the advice and descriptions handed down to him. War is not popular. I have been there, but I was doing my job. DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY!
It's the same people that are crying now about the war that cried "why don't we do something" when WE got attacked etc.
Same idiots in my opinion that do not like GOD in our schools or government, a government that was founded in Christianity. They want to take GOD out of everything. Fine. Deliver my mail on Easter, Christmas etc. Oh, but that won't do, they enjoy their vacations and Holidays.
We have/need to support our troops because they are doing their job. If they signed up for college benefits, then they IMO get what they deserve. USE everything and anyone they can to achieve their goals for free, but when they are faced with the true purpose they are not so happy.
I retired because I wanted to enjoy my family more and to go see ball games etc. Sacrafices that our military men and women make are incredible. God Bless everyone of them and I thank them for their service.

And that is the exact attitude and response that gets these threads closed. There is no need for profanity and aggression towards anyone for their own views. You have the right to disagree, but please do so in an adult manner. Keep the attitude and anger at the door.

It's nice to see that many of the posters here that I respect as aquarists, I also have new respect for in their personal beliefs.
To all yall that served in the military, or are serving, a big Thanks.
I love the guided missile analogy.. that's a great way to sum it up. Once the military gets involved, you can't try to put a leash on em.

Actually, I havent seen anywhere that this thread is only about bashing "your country". As Tang said...everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I can understand you getting angry...as I have, while reading some of the posts. But, please...conduct yourself in an adult manner. I, for one, would like to continue this thread.

Actually, I've lost many "brothers"...and "sisters"...over there, so please dont act like you're the only one that has suffered a loss from this.

There is one quick, very easy solution to that problem...just dont visit this thread.
We're not trying to offend you or anyone else. The only thing hostility is going to do is to make you look bad and get this thread closed...2 things that I dont want to happen.

for the fact that you said i have lost many brothers and sisters you obviously were refering to fellow americans right? because if not u are one sick ******* liar

Actually, I was referring to men that I have served with. Men who I have served with, that have gone out on operations and not returned alive. Men who just a few hours earlier I was playing cards with, drinking a beer with, talking with etc...and men who I have personally watched pass away.
Every person I've ever served with, whether I served under them or whether I had command of them, I consider every single one of them my brother and sister.
I come from a military family. My father was ARMY Special Forces, for 17 years, having spent 4 tours in Vietnam. 5 of my uncles were all military...2 never returning home, from various conflicts. My sister was an A-10 Warthog pilot, in the USAF.

well god bless you but dont be a di** towards me for expresing my opinion everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i am sick and tired of people complaining about this and that the fact is nothing can ever replace my brother who i grew up with for 10 years of my life and now he is gone forever nothing can replace that, 23 years old he was do you realize that only 23 years old, he had a lot more living to do than that but he fought for what was right and thats freedom and thats why iam joining the army and i would not want to come back home to a country full of people that dont back me up i would want every citizen of the United States to back me up in a time like this that is our duty as citizens to back our fellow citizens up no questions asked

I dont think I was being rude or disrespectful to you but if you felt that I was, then I apologize.
I deeply regret that you lost a brother...he's one that I would consider a "brother" as well as all of the other past and present veterans that have posted in this thread. I also commend you on your decision to join the ARMY.
The majority of the people...99% of them...that have posted in this thread have been either for the war, have been against it but are still supporting our troops and both.
You are more than welcome to express your opinions, but so is everyone else, whether we agree with them or not. We were simply asking you to refrain from using profanity or being hostile towards anyone because it doesnt help. I think we can all understand that you're upset and frustrated...just cant understand why you're resorted to calling us names, when we're all in agreement with you.

I have watched this thread and i havent chimed in on it because the last time i got in one of these heated debates i lost my screen name and had to start a new one and it made me look like a newbie .................. I will say one thing with no disrespect to anybody ......... and I will not reply to anybody who thinks this is disrespectful .......... My brother in law is in the marines and he is getting ready to go back to iraq for his second tour ..... he has been in the marine for 3 1/2 years and was a sargeant at 2 1/2 years(god bless his hard working soul) I support his decisions and appreciate his efforts for this country. How ever I do not support BUSH in anyway way , shape, or form. I believe clinton was a better president (JMO) i saw the economy rise , and then fall when presidancy changed hands ..... how ever i also believe the john kerry would have done no better in office. IMO they are both clowns. I will be voting for hillary next election , it is time for a woman president. anyway thats all im saying
