would having the moonlights on be the equivalent of a covered flashlight or would i be able to see more with the moonlights off and a covered flashlight?

We have a moon light that comes on when the lights go out. What we use to see all the night critters is a flash light with a red cover on it. We see the critters just fine, but it doesn't bother anyone. For some reason the red doesn't bother them or you can use a flash light with a LED bulb in it that doesnt seem to bother them either.

I am new to the SW tank hobby so please excuse my ignorance, but why do regular flash light bulbs bother the fish if they are under light all day long? Does it shock them?

Thank you!

I know they are talking about viewing at night time but I was wondering what a regular flash light bulb does to the fish and why they say not to use it?

AHHH,, the strong bright light in a "Pitch Black" nightime enviroment will shock the fish and nightime critters, when they are suppose to be in darkness and "sleeping"

OK now I get it! I am so new to all of this and trying to educate myself as quick as possible. I have already became a HUGE fan of our SW tank. See the things hubby brings home

We acquired our tank from a close friend who was moving and had to part ways with it. I was not that excited about it, in till it came home and got set up. Now I can not get enough of it.

tobin(seasalt )had tanks when he was younger but he got another one when he go sick with cancer the first time now we have this one and we all just love the fish ! whats not to love though - the night critters we are talking about live in the live rocks -little worms and bugs and such

We just added a new night critter to our mix. We got a brittle starfish, I thought he would hide for a few days in the reef and rocks. He did not come out his first night in the tank but by morning he was on the glass pushing the turbo snails out of his way! But we spend hours just gazing into the tank day and night. The only night critter I do not like is our new discovery of the bristle worm or worms we have. There are not many but I am not that fond on them.

Hubby found that last night, we may try it. But from everything we have read it says that they are not bad for your tank in less they take over it. Right now we have only seen one and he is only about a 3/4 an inch. Now am I correct, will he harm the reef, coral or fish in any way?
