Night of the living snails

so I went out yesterday and bought a serpent star, I put him in the tank and he was fine...not 30 mins later....I came and looked at the tank to see if he was OK and I notice all my nas snails rose up from their hiding in the sand bed and began eating him. They were literally inside the starfish, I could see his center disc bubbling as there were about 6 snails swarmed on top of him. Even the fish then started in on the poor guy (the snails were sloppy eaters and stringy meat of the starfish was coming out of him) it was like night of the living snails in my tank. I just wanted to know if this is common for these snails to do this?? As far as fish go I have 4 Molly Millers, 1 tomato clown, 1 Dwarf Angel, 2 small sergeant majors so I know they did not bother the SF....but hte snails were all over him and I hadn't seen those snails in months until yesterday

their either thought he was food (being on the sand bed and all) or he could have been sick (not as likly though i think) SO if you add another star, make sure to put him in the rock so he can hide. They just move a little to slow to outrun the murderers

Nassarius don't eat healthy specimens... he was dying. No matter where you put him in the tank, he was singing the "I'm gonna croak" song.

wow really, so I guess they can detect that sort of thing...ahh well I wont buy one from that LFS again....thanks for the replies
I did notice that when I put him in the tank and he started moving about, he ran into my LTA and was literally on top of him, the LTA had closed in around him, I had to get him out of the anem. Do you think he got stung to death first??

The same way your cat can sleep in the yard all day long and not be bothered, but if there is something dead out there, the crows are on it in a heart beat. Dead or dying things just smell different.
