No impact reef tank?

I’m coming back into this hobby because I have done preliminary research that indicated it was possible to have a environmentally sound tank that has minimal impact on the environment. The reality is not as easy…
Can someone point me to a solid source to setting up a no-impact reef? MY LFS is not so helpful and I cant seem to find a good single source on line…
Thanks!

GARF looks great for coral frags but having trouble sourcing good rock...I want to cycle with rock, so all I really need is some good "base" rock right now - ideally uncured. Im having a hard time finding it.
Maybe I'll call GARF (their website is not so good!)
Thanks!

so you want base rock? or live rock to cycle? check out tampa bay saltwater. they aquaculture all of their live rock out in florida nd when it gets to you it has a ton of crazy things on it, such as brittle stars, sponges, snails, corals, algae, etc. really good stuff!
i think the link is www.tampabaysaltwater.com
good luck

If I cycle with all of that stuff wont the cycle just kill it?
---What's the deal with discussing other websites on the BBS? A competitor has cultuired live rock on sale, but if they arent trustworthy, theres no real way to tell if its truly cultured...

Arkman,
For Aquacultured frags I suggest you stick to fellow hobbiests.
I have yet to see a GARF frag that didn't look like it was simply broken off a wild coral head. I do not believe their stuff is aquacultured regardless of what they state on their site.
I agree with the Florida Aquacultured Rock for uncured. Some of the critters won't make it but most of them will. That's what I have in my tank, I will do it again when the time comes.
Another aspect of no-impact reefing IMO is fraggin or breeding and selling/trading to fellow hobbiests or your LFS. This is where we can do the most good.

Thanks Bang --- I'm look foward to trading/selling/buying with all of you.
Worked out how to feed the mandarin fry yet?
John - thanks on TBS, they are almost 50% more expensive than some other places but I keep hearing good things.

arkman,
I just got the 30 lb "package" from TBS. It looks awesome, but the only thing I would recommend is asking for specific sizes of LR. I didn't, and they sent me one huge piece and one smaller one. Here is a pic of the larger rock.
Also, if you can pick up the shipment yourself from the airport, you will save a lot of money. I picked it up (not too much hastle).

That's a GREAT looking peice of rock...what about this argument that the florida rock is denser than s. pacific???

the florida aquacultured rock is very dense. we ordered 30 pounds for our shope and they snet us three pieces weighign 10 pounds each that were the size of footballs and basically the same shape, just kinda bouldery. thsi is the one disadvantage. you dont really get all the cool shapes and forsm that some of the stuff from the pacific looks like. however, if you used the agrocrete method and formed your own rocks, then used the florida aquacultured rock to seed it i think you would have a very nice, non-impact reef tank that woudl be filled with life!
good luck

John - thank you -- thats the best of both worlds and what I will do...for the rest of the rock I need. Great idea.
