1- did you buy your rock from a store or from someone on cl
2_-with small tanks ie 40g or less weekly water changes worked best for me larger tanks I can go up to a month
3-do you have any lps able to grow in your tank also if you have any leathers in there get them out
what kind of food are you using rods food 2 a week works great for me just turn your skimmer off for a while hope you find the problem
1. No, it was ordered from a professional site.
2. I didn't do a single water change on the tank for about five months and didn't have any problems with it what so ever.
3. No corals, they all bleached and died. All SPS. I gave away my small leather coral before it started to melt. I didn't want to take any chances.
I think I am almost going to completely re-start the tank once I drill my 55g.

I used to give it a good loving every other night, but it hasn't been getting any lately.

I haven't done any real tank maintenance for about two to three months. Definitely since my daughter was born - it just seems to be put on the back burner. I have, however, done at least four water changes in the last two months. I have also been harvesting macro, emptying the skimmer cup, etc. etc.

Well sounds like you have a plan. May I ask you what trace elements you dose? If you read the ingrediants in some lie Kent for example, copper is listed.
Just a thought. an I too am sorry your dealing with tank issues.
BTW.... is this the tank you contaminated with Round up or some kind of weed poison?

Possibly. My hands weren't completely dried off before I put them in the tank - there was an emergency. I have since then done many water changes. The coralline algae didn't die off - and in fact has increased. I have no idea why, then, the montipora would bleach.
Round up is supposed to be a herbicide - however, it didn't kill any of my macroalgae.... so I don't think it was that.

I think it's a combination of X, Y & Z. The lack of good lovin being the biggest. The poisoning thing doesn't always help as you well know. Did someone already ask how often you change your r/o filters?

My water store changes them pretty regularly. They TDS test the water in front of me, and they always keep it below 3. I only buy if it's 1 or 0. So, I don't think it is my top off water.
I'm going to buy some saltwater from the store and see if that helps get things back on track.

IO is actually very good salt mix for the price
I read so many threads in Rc about tropic marine pro crash their system.
Why spend 2-3x more for a salt that can potentially RTN you SPS
I am a proud IO user and I am trying to do once a month water change to remove copper from the system since I primary feed lots of pellets now.
My rodi filter has not been change for almost 2 years now since the TDS never change its always been at 4 ... I know it's not zero but it's working why fixed it of not broke?

It HAS to be something that I am not thinking of. :( I will keep using IO,... but I have no clue what could be causing the bleaching. I guess I really need to keep a close eye on my pH and temp.

You know what I am having a similar issue with my tank. My SPS is bleaching and I don't know why. I have been doing better with my maintenance, upgraded equipment and my LPS and anemones are doing great. My zoas and SPS not so much. I do need to check my parameters better to see what that can tell me.

SPS are very temperamental I have some STN on my tank too on on colony no bugs are anything it just does.
How's your alkalinity ? Stable and dont change?
Do you have chloramine in your city water?
My mentors tank crash because of chloramines

I only use RO water from the water store. I don't believe it is chloramines. I think a massive water change would help
Since there isn't really anything but coralline in the tank right now, calcium and alkalinity stay relatively stable.
I might try some GSP or xenia just to have something in my tank.

Chloramines are really deadly for acropora check your city water if they add chloramines in your city's tap water in needs massive amount of carbon to remove it.
Also For the life of me I can't keep Xenia happy :(
I will give you colonies of neon GSP as its one of few soft corals that growing not fast but none the less growing.

wow. you both are so helpful. Thank you.
The problem isn't accepting it by any means... its just the last time I paid shipping from PA overnight to my house in LA was $175. I could go down to the fish store and buy $15 frags for a lot less...
now, if there were some way that it wouldn't cost that much to ship, I would gladly take the gifts!

I will look at my city water and see if they use chloramines. I doubt it because the city is broke... but just in case!!!

Why not just do priority shipping?? 5 bucks. Might take 2 days to get there, but if packed right they should be alright.
